Introduction

Celebratory dinner at home for my 40th Birthday.

Flight 1 - Starter (1 note)

Antipasti

White
2012 Quinta do Casal Branco Ribatejo Capoeira Branco Tejo Portugal, Ribatejo
87 points
Very pale, lemon appearance. Medium nose of green apple, lemon, and limes. Simple, refreshing palate with citrus fruit and a little minerality. Light bodied, high acidity, and short finish. A nice, simple palate cleanser for antipasti

Flight 2 - 1st course (1 note)

Duck Confit with mushroom

Red
1982 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Medium, ruby appearance. Bricking but actually still quite deep in colour. Medium nose of leather, game, dark fruit, soup, Great nose. Very pure fruit up front and still quite fresh. Lovely charge in the aftertaste with lovely acidity and delicate tannin. I would confuse this for a younger burgundy if tasted blind. It’s ready to drink and won’t improve from here but is drinking great now. Decanted for 2 hours.

Flight 3 - Main Course (1 note)

Thick cut T-Bone Steak with garlic and rosemary French fries

Red
1975 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Medium, ruby appearance. Much bigger and broodier nose than the 82 Branaire Ducru tasted side by side. Nose of herbs, tar, dark fruit – quite funky. Strong fruit up front with dark flavour profile. There are enough hints of magic in here to make it thoroughly enjoyable but no doubting they are concealed by a wall of tannin. I don’t think that will resolve. Medium, leathery finish. Decanted for 2 hours.
