Tasted January 25, 2015 - January 26, 2015 by Kirk Grant with 786 views

Introduction

A small group of devoted lovers of Musar gathered together to share in what will probably become one of my most memorable experiences with Musar other than the first time I met Serge Hochar.

Flight 1 - 1988-1994 (6 notes)

Red
1988 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
Color: Bricked-ruby core leading into brick and eventually a clear meniscus.
Smell: Sweet red fruits, baking spices, notes of old concrete/auto body shop floor, leather, with light floral notes that delicately interlace along the this truly wonderful aromatic experience.
Taste: Tart cherry, raspberries, clove, blueberries, crimini mushrooms, with a whisper of aged wood (like old railroad ties).
Overall: In the mouth this is all silk, light body, med+ acidity, med- tannin. There is an immense density of flavor on a whisper of the palate. This is a wine that calls to mind the grace of a ballet dancer with the intensity of an endurance athlete. Classic Musar...and a wine that has few equals. In honor of Bart Broadbent who made tasting the '84 Rouge possible I'll use the five * system. (*****)

Red
1989 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Smell: Gorgonzola cheese it the initial & dominant scent followed by cement floor, leather, smoked/charred meats, white tea, and tobacco.
Taste: blackberries, blueberries, mushrooms, black cherry, and clove.
Overall: In the mouth this is all power, med+ body, med+ acidity, med+ tannin. There is an immense density that calls to mind the vision of the iron fist in a velvet glove. This is an outstanding Musar...yet it suffers when side by side with the '88. In honor of Bart Broadbent who made tasting the '84 Rouge possible I'll use the five * system. (***/*)

Taste: Tart cherry, cranberry, blueberries, brown sugar, clove, and oolong tea.
Overall: In the mouth this returns to the bold & powerful Musar framework; med body, med+ acidity, med- tannin. There is a sense of density in flavor that is difficult to wrap your mind around given the medium body. In honor of Bart Broadbent who made tasting the '84 Rouge possible I'll use the five * system. Flight 2 - 1995-2000 (6 notes)

Red
1996 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
Color: Ruby with minimal bricking at the rim.
Smell: Typical Musar funk appears to be masked by muted notes of bleu cheese, roasted nuts, mushrooms, and dried red fruits
Taste: Tart and lean notes of cranberry and wild strawberry with little else present.
Overall: Lean and muted, med- body, high acidity, with tart fruit. Not as good a showing as past bottles. In honor of Bart Broadbent who made tasting the '84 Rouge possible I'll use the five * system. (**/*)

Red
1997 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
Color: Deep Pigeon's Blood Ruby at the core with sediment in the glass.
Smell: Big & bold almost ripe notes of baked red fruits with heavy doses of vanilla and dominant oak notes. Very "Californian" showing the warmth of the year possibly?
Taste: Monolithic notes of cherry and cough syrup.
Overall: I've had a hard time enjoying this Musar after the first few times I had it. This vintage has stumped me multiple times when tasted blind as it almost reminds me of a cross between a modern Barolo & Californian train-wreck. Full body, med- acidity, high tannin; overwhelmingly astringent and out of balance for the typical Musar's that I've loved in the past. Maybe this can recover with time in the bottle...but I have a hard time finding faith given how out of balance it has been repeatedly compared to other vintages. In honor of Bart Broadbent who made tasting the '84 Rouge possible I'll use the five * system. (*)

Red
1999 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
Color: Ruby core with a clear meniscus.
Smell: Warm notes of ripe red fruits, brown sugar, clove, cement and a strong not of crimini mushroom.
Taste: Red fruits vie for the spotlight as notes of "Black & bleu" steak with serious char leads into clove.
Overall: Returning to the bolder yet restrained side of Musar; this is a wine built for the long-haul. Med-full body, high acidity, med+ tannin. This is a wine that will reward those that hold off from opening this until it's at least 20 years old. It's still amazing now...but in the context of tasting the vertical...this is really young.
