Introduction
Thanks to Salil for organizing and hosting - i surely needed a night out... it was great to see David B and Laura again - thank you so much for coming out to see me. Do let me know when you are in NYC next!
A pleasure to meet Brian as well! overall a very fun night. David felt a touch of tca in the 79 - but i cant say i did. and it was lovely even the next morning after being left out on the table overnight.
it was also fun to "prank" the guys with two LI wines served blind. I will let them weigh in on how they felt about it. I love both of those wines and was happy with them.
Flight 1 (4 notes)
White - Off-dry
1994 Dr. F. Weins-Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
took its time - but here it is - on sunday - kicking it up. Floral nose, citrus and lemon curd, touch of zest, mid is still off-dry, full of late autumn orchard fruit and spices. hint of pine on the long zingy finish. This is in a great place now and will easily age more. the finish keeps going - puckering with citrus notes and pleasing the palate with the baked apple touches. delicious - thank you!
White
2006 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Kellerberg
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
i am starting to think i prefer lighter gruners and bigger rieslings from Pichler. to me - this is a BIG wine and, with all its attractive qualities, doesnt hit that note of mineral and "green" edge i was hoping to find. Nose is of stone and lemon curd, with apricots, peaches and overall orchard fruit hitting every corner of the mouth. but it is heavy and doesnt provide the respite from the power. Not that one feels the alcohol on the finish - but you can almost sense it. very good wine - just not my cup of gruner
Flight 2 (3 notes)
Red
2009 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Cabernet
France, Loire Valley, Touraine
ripe cherry, herbs, rich nose of sweet ripe fruit - almost gamay-like. with time - more herbs and mineral. mid is full of fresh red fruit, acidity, touch of tobacco. nice medium finish with a zing of lemon. a hint of bell pepper on the nose - but only if you search for it. Yum!
Red
2005 Château de Coulaine Chinon Clos de Turpenay
France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
one of the best Cab Francs i have had (granted - not an expert) developed gracefully over four days! ripe blackberry and sweet plum. rich velvety mid, long savory finish. touch of herbs and earth... something tells me i will be looking for good chinon...
Red
2004 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
easily WOTN for me. yes - this is ready to go and may not be one to age for another several decades...BUT, it IS just plain gorgeous. Spices, dry cherry, with time - more mushrooms and earth. palate is full of bright cherry, silky with some herbs and earth. lightly tannic - reminds of an aged nebbiolo, elegant finish - amazingly complex already. WOTN
Flight 3 (4 notes)
Red
2005 Paumanok Assemblage
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
vanilla, touch of cab franc, sweet plum, herbs, good fruit. rich mid. deep acidic core that keeps this fresh. touch of tobacco leaf on the finish. resolved tannins. well aged and really lovely wine. (btw only improved on the second day - no hurry to drink up)
Red
2010 KMV Project Red Bordeaux Blend
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
never disappoints. ripe black fruit, spicy, rich mid with black and red fruit, great acidity. touch of tobacco, some earth. hint of herbs. long finish. DAMN GOOD!
Red
2004 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
FUNKY!! stems and herbs, ripe leather and a hint of savory-meat components. pepper and black fruit, mouth puckering acidity, this wine bites back! with air - more savory and mellower. lots of fun - would love to taste in 5 years.
Red
1979 Domaine de Chevalier
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Thanks you to Salil for this - another Birthyear wine he popped for me. amazing aged BDX. mineral, tobacco, touch of leather and savory notes. The mid is light but still full of red fruit and savory components. amazingly easy to drink - perfect food wine. This is the BDX to have with chicken or heartier fish. nice medium finish with resolved tannins and a zip of freshness. lovely!
Closing
thanks again to all - and Salil - your generosity does not know limits :)
Hope to see you all soon!
