Introduction

A relaxing long weekend with friends and some very fine wine.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
Silky, balanced, lovely texture. Med wt dark fruit and soft spice flavours. The weight is soft to medium, with age most likely having softened it up. Pleasingly refined but not overly expressive flavours.
Red
2001 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
94 points
Deep, rich, dark spice and black fruits, incredible intensity together with great silkiness. Beautiful balance and structure.

Flight 2 (4 notes)

White
2009 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Pale gold, nice lustre.
Lovely bright peaches, stone spice, some cream.
Light medium intensity, lovely purity of flavours, still taught of structure. Peaches and cream, with a fine mineral spice zest running through it. Delicate but clearly defined. Nicely balanced. Finishes with good length. Perhaps in an intermediate phase with softening fruit but still drinking well.
Red
1971 Domaine Doudet Corton-Maréchaudes Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
92 points
Dark core with a brick coloured rim. Still youthful looking.
Lightly earthy and plum, a little dark spice, only a gentle fragrance.
Dark cherry, damson and plum, dark ripe fruits generally. Earthy spice, some tar and a lovely light blueberry floral note. Developing some rich gamey characters but really it is still dominated by fruit. Very well preserved wine. Not as expressive as might be expected for its age, together with the ripe plummy fruits it thus appears younger than it is. Could easily be kept longer.
Red
2001 Penfolds Bin 389 Australia, South Australia
90 points
Black with no rim.
Pure dark fruits, a little tar spice and soft vanilla.
Lush medium weight palate, nicely textured, very well balanced. Dark ripe fruits, plums and blackcurrants, licorice. Finishes very long and smooth, vanilla comes through in the end in a well integrated way. Restrained power, it has many years ahead.
Red
2000 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale La Tourtine France, Provence, Bandol
91 points
Ripe red and black fruits, gentle tar spice and a hint of earth and game.
Silky smooth medium weight palate. Ripe berries, plums, blackberries and raspberries with licorice and tar adding darker edge. Some earthiness but not excessive plus a hint of funky game but quite subtle. Very nice drinking and probably has another 5 years.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
2006 Jasper Valley Shiraz Australia, New South Wales, South Coast, Shoalhaven Coast
88 points
Deep ruby red colour, slight bricking at the rim.
Ripe red fruits with earthy fragrance. plums and raspberries with a distinct forest floor character, some tar spice and licorice also.
Meaty but with strong ripe plum fruit throughout. A hint of sherbet and dark spicy licorice on the long finish. This is a very smooth, lush and velvety wine with gentle tannin and reasonable acidity. depth of flavour is excellent, with surprising weight. a bit hard to believe it is local wine . . . but no arguments with its price. drinks well and could probably go another 5 years based on its form to date.
Red
1966 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna Australia, South Australia
95 points
Dark core with ruby brick rim.
Earthy, Xmas cake sweet bright fruits, plums and licorice, tar. Lovely fragrance.
Light to medium weight, fleshy and still quite velvety bodied. Dark fruits, plums and licorice dominate. Oak is very well integrated and barely noticeable. Meaty stock and some yeasty Vegemite characters appear on the long finish, adding complexity to a rich fruit driven palate. Excellent blend of fruit, spice and dark developed characters all on a solid frame with good acidity and fine but persistent and very clearly defined tannins. Superb structure for a 49 year old wine and supports its youthful flavours. Perhaps not my ideal style but undeniably interesting and still very alive, not just a relic in any sense.
Red
2001 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
95 points
A nicely developed fragrance with red berries supported by earthy cedary complexity.
Similar flavours, pure ripe red berries with a lovely rich cedary streak. Maybe a little more developed than expected but only makes it more attractive. Classically stylish with superb structure and very fine long finish. Beautiful wine.
Red - Fortified
1950 Domaine Piétri-Géraud Banyuls France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Banyuls
94 points
Dark, dense, with a bricking/coffee rim.
Rich dark plums and prunes with scents of toffee, raisins and caramel.
Raisins, fruit cake, fig, blueberry, raspberry, and maraschino cherry. A delicious bright blend of fruit driven flavours. Age comes through with earthy rich raisins and honey, just a touch of caramel. Weight is soft to medium, the balance is excellent and the finish long and poised, with lingering secondary flavours. Great drinking.
