Turley Pick-Up Party

Turley's twice-a-year pickup parties for mailing list participants are a highlight with lots of good food, new releases and some library releases from magnum. New releases didn't show quite as well this time as they did in previous years; many of the wines seemed slightly closed, especially aromatically. But they hold significant promise, perhaps hinting at more elegance than big, bold fruit. We'll likely cellar most of these for at least a year or two.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

2005 Turley Grenache Pesenti Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Past its prime, but still hinting at the glories that once slept beneath the cork. Some dusty grenache notes, but tasted diluted and not showing much in the bouquet. Browning at the rim. Chalky finish.

2012 Turley The White Coat USA, California
In a lighter style than previous vintages. Light bouquet with gold/yellow glints in the glass. Medium texture, with nutty apricot qualities. Normally these are more expressive and rich on the palate. Perhaps this was in a closed phase.
2013 Turley Zinfandel Juvenile USA, California
Very much a juvenile (lower case j). A lighter, more nuanced style of this offering, or perhaps suffering a touch of bottle shock. Good stuffings, but not very expressive right now. Fine tannins. Plums and apricots with a zesty finish. Drink 2016-2020?
2013 Turley Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Beautiful, bright ruby color with great legs. Bursting with fruit. Red and black raspberries, peach jam and well-integrated tannins. Still tight and not very expressive in the finish. Drink 2017-2022.

2013 Turley Zinfandel Rattlesnake Ridge USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
"Black Pepper!" was the first descriptor everyone in the party came up with. And, yes, it's generously seasoned with it. A restrained nose, dark ruby red and great legs. Plums and cherries. Satisfying finish. One-dimensional at this stage of its life; will be interesting to see how this develops. Drink 2018-2020.

2013 Turley Zinfandel Mead Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley, Atlas Peak
Bright and extremely fruit forward out of the chute and at the front of the palate. Time in the glass serves it well as it calms down and provides black fruits with peppery smokey notes with some wood in the finish. Not yet integrated, it seems. Drink 2017-2022?
2013 Turley Zinfandel Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
The most complete wine of the tasting right now. Great fruit up front (cherries, black raspberries, apricot) with subtle cola notes and black licorice in the finish. Lovely and elegant. Picks up weedy/grassy notes that dissipate. But overall delicious.

2006 Turley Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Best of tasting. Bursting with black and purple fruits from first whiff to last swallow, ending with that distinctive Turley apricot. A thrill from beginning to end, with an elegance that defies the varietal's usual characteristics. Finishes with beguiling notes of sandalwood and baking spices, with a finish that seems to go on forever. The complete package. Delicious -- and this from a nine-year-old zin.
