Introduction

Ewald Moseler took us to Urzig to visit Kajo and taste a wonderful line up of his wines. There were quite a few of us there, so I wasn't able to keep as much detail in my notes as usual. Some are short, and many are missing scores, but hopefully they are still interesting. As expected, many bottles were fantastic.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

 The nose shows peaches with good depth backed by some nutmeg and rounded with a touch of cream that is surprising considering this is a dry wine. Light limes start things out and the palate has a fresh feel reminding me of sparkling water. Lemon and lime flavors sink into the sides of the palate, and a touch of orange flavor shows toward the finish. This is easy and approachable.
White - Off-dry

Young nectarines are straight forward on the nose. Nectarine flavors deliver on the palate, along with great fresh orange flavors. The citrus is clean and juicy, with just a touch of zest adding structure. The acidity is light, but still delivers and some peach flavors show later. This is friendly.

This engaging nose doesn’t show fruit scents, rather soil, dry grasses on the prairie, and a touch of perfume. The hay shows on the palate as well, along with light peaches and oranges. The fruit and savory qualities deliver good complexity. The acidity is on the lighter side, but even across the palate, and persistent. Good peaches show toward the finish. This is friendly as well, with good complexity.

The nose shows mineral components of red dry soil spiced with aromas of orange zest. Orange fruit shows on the palate with some zest. A touch of mineral adds depth to this wine, as the overall experience is friendly.

Apple and floral scents mingle with those of fresh hay in the field in summer. Great delicate orange and sweet apple flavors lead off on the palate. Delicate green apple acidity dances while honey flavors provide richness later. This is soft, clean, and clear with many different layers to contemplate and enjoy. 93+

2013 Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel *** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The nose is a little austere, wrapped up in dried flowers and dried peaches. Despite this nose, it’s spritely on the palate. Peaches and yellow flowers mingle with apple acidity. The fruit is full and sweet, and touch of honey sits lightly on the mid palate, linger long the finish. The acidity pushes out toward the finish as well, working nicely with the honey flavors. 91

2002 Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese *** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Savory notes of beef jerky and some petrol mix with aromas of very ripe melons. On the palate, ripe cantaloupe and balanced ripe peaches show. Some honey appears later along with a bit of spice. The acidity reminds me of red apples, and it lingers with cantaloupe flavors on the finish.
White - Off-dry
2008 Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese ** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasted during lots of conversation, notes are limited. The nose is still a bit funky, with yeast notes from spontaneous fermentation overriding the fruit. I guess it needs some more time in bottle. The palate is in good shape however, reminding me of a fruit salad with acidity. Flavors of lemons, apples, bananas, and oranges all blend together nicely.

Dried flower scents rise from the glass along with limes and young peaches. Dried hay shows quickly on the palate, followed by lovely oranges, green apple flavors, and engaging light peaches. There’s a great transition from the fruit into some lime like acidity which cleans the palate slowly, allowing you to reflect on the fruit.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) Erdener Prälat Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The nose has engaging scents of of golden apples, dried hay, and dried peaches and apricots. When tasted, light flower flavors start things out followed by pears and yellow apples. Honey flavors sing on the mid palate, never becoming too heavy, and echoes of pineapple show themselves on the finish. The texture is soft, and the wine sits long and light on the palate. What a treat!

There was lots of conversation again, so the notes here are very brief. Aromas of grapefruit, with zest, sage, and red soil show on the nose. The palate is quite complicated, with yellow apples, pears, and even cherry flavors showing. Some mineral and floral flavors appear as well.
