Introduction

Our friend Ewald Moseler took a group of us to visit Weingut Karl Erbes after our visit to Jos Christoffel Jr. He showed us a good range of wines, and remarked on the high ripeness levels obtained in some recent vintages. The flavors were full and engaging across all wines, and I look forward to future vintages from this young producer.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White - Off-dry
2013 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The nose shows tart, icy gooseberry scents mixed in with wild brush. Icy flavors show immediately on contact, followed by young peaches. It's bright, clean, and fresh with a touch of pineapple fruit providing sweetness.
White - Off-dry
2009 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese feinherb Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
89 points
The nose is light showing young peaches and ice. It's light and clean on the palate showing delicate green apples and slowly settling acidity. Later on, young peaches, with skins intact, work with gentle limes to deliver some nice fruit. It's delicate throughout the experience. 89+
White
2013 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The nose is faint, with light scents of pineapple and underbrush. The palate shows lots of complexity quickly. Red apples and ripe limes deliver great flavor and lingering acidity. Everything is gentle and delicate from beginning to end, showing great elegance along with the lovely flavors.
White - Off-dry
2012 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The nose shows lots of fruit with aromas of pineapples and oranges backed by herbal scents that add a bit of complexity. The fruit shows quickly when tasted, with oranges, peaches, and pineapples showing bright character. Green apple acidity is slow to build on the mid palate, and it then lingers long along with pineapple. Full sweetness persists as well, and these components all contribute to a long and enjoyable finish.
White - Off-dry
2011 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Aromas of pineapples and ice are backed by a herbal edge. The wine shows a spritzy feel on the palate. When tasted, lemon drop sweetness leads the way. Oranges and pie apples appear on the mid palate. Some acidity works well towards drying things out on the finish while lemon drop flavors persist. Overall, I find it fresh and engaging.
White - Off-dry
2005 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The nose is very complex with a fantastic core of plumes and pineapples and savory edges of sausage and diesel. It's clear on the palate with mineral notes at the core supported by herbal flavors later on. Honey shows full sweetness on the sides of the palate, and pineapple flavors bring sweetness to the center. Towards the finish, some apple flavors appear as well. The acidity is gentle here, but it lasts very long, along with apples and sweet pineapples.
White - Off-dry
2003 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese ** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Complex aromas show in the glass, with scents of mint, candied lemon peel, and a hint of wood smoke all working well together. It's round on contact, with herbal flavors showing right away. Big apple flavors bloom and become full, and peaches show themselves on the mid palate. Herbal flavors hang onto the center of the palate adding complexity to the big fruit flavors. Full sweetness is present through the entire experience.
