White - Sparkling
2009 Nyetimber Classic Cuvée United Kingdom, England, Sussex, West Sussex

Head to head against Gusbourne from 2009. Sorry to draw comparisons, but the Gusbourne was a lightweight like a Perrier Jouet. The Nyetimber had an additional level of complexity - touching on Bollinger in style. A hint more biscuit which I love. Fabulous champagne and a wonderful start to the tasting.

White
2012 Ridge Chardonnay Estate USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Nice golden colour - the nose there was bundles of fruit. On the palate were tropical fruits but woah... the oak. Maybe my palate is note a fan of american oak - but it became more and more noticeable. Interestingly the group absolutely love this... I'm more neutral about it. Probably unbalanced in the quality/price war towards price.

White
2009 Jean-Yves Devevey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Light Golden colour - on the nose a fruit floral affair, you can smell an element of sweetness which makes it light and refreshing, until... on the palate - in comes the flavour with a big citrusy/grapefruit hit. The taste lingered oh so long... lovely.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2008 Domaine David Clark Bourgogne Au Pelson France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
89 points
Purple-red in the glass. Bouquet had a good nose of black cherry but the oak could be smelt. On the palate it felt unbalanced towards oak and acidity. Medium length.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2005 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Gran Reserva Finca Ygay Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
92 points
Deep blackcurrant visuals - almost like Ribena straight from the bottle - the nose was lovely - blackfruits, cigar box - the complexity was immediately evident. On the palate, there is a lovely blend of fruit - verging on hedonistic!? V nice.
Red
2008 Mazza Wines Tempranillo Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Geographe
88 points
Clear purple/red - nice balance of oak and fruit - could have kept drinking it, but compared to the Spanish Rioja it was single dimensional in its complexity. Good effort but spending a few £ more gets you a big step in quality.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Te Mata Estate Cabernets / Merlot Estate Vineyards New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
89 points
Dark ruby colour - very fruit driven with plums evident on the nose and palate. Nice drink, but outplayed in the company.
Red
2004 Château Gruaud Larose Sarget de Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Medium/ruby red - slight touch of oak but not much fruit, medium tannin - the palate had a touch of green. During the tasting, we had a "Countdown" style conundrum which came up with "retarded" - no reflection on the wine though!

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2011 Michael Hall Shiraz Sang de Pigeon Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Quite dry on the palate and tannin still dominating - if this calms down over the next few years it will certainly score higher.
Red
2011 Qupé Syrah USA, California, Central Coast
92 points
Slightly controversial wine at the tasting - but I loved it. After several wines this big fruit driven wine came in. It had a nice sweet aftertaste - yummy fruity - almost fruit jam.

Flight 7 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
94 points
Rich dark golden colour - honeyed sweet and complex. The after taste just evolves with a touch of acidity - yummy.

Flight 8 (1 note)

Red
2010 Changyu Cabernet Sauvignon Moser Family China, Ningxia
No score - and no formal note. But this was actually a surprise wine. It wasn't classical old world, but not a bad attempt. Slight green-ness was evident but it was a good drink.

Flight 9 (1 note)

Red
2011 Ronan by Clinet France, Bordeaux

Drank from Imperial (yep, 6L!) This was really nice - super smooth 100% merlot. We had great time pouring and drinking from the beast bottle. It was a good wine enjoyed by all.
