Introduction

Vertical tasting of Solaia introduced by Marchese Piero, Cottarella and wine enthusiast Paolo Baracchino.
Starting from the older vintage may sound weird, but was a very good idea.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

First vintage from young vines. Released 3 years later because not convincing.
Brick red, but vivid and crystalline.
Intense and complex at nose: Fruity: red fruit with alcohol, dried plums. Mature spices: leather, fur, black pepper, juta, humus, more evident at the beginning; and then tertiary hints: enamel. Dried flowers.
Important entry in mouth, but more long than wide, compressed on mineral-acidity notes over a weak structure and a medium tannin. Vegetal notes (jujube)

Garnet red, with orange rim.
Intense, complex and fine nose: Wild hints at the beginning, humus, then opening in a nice spicy: coffee, cocoa powder, nutmeg! Ripe red fruits, macerated. Balsamic: minty notes and camphor.
Balanced, wider and with a nicer structure: fruity and velvety, mature tannin and tamed, with a nice mineral/acidity spine.

Medium garnet red.
Intense and complex nose. Feathers and leather at first, then nice spices: nutmeg. black pepper. Ripe red fruits and balsamic (camphor) hints at the end.
Full, important mouth: alcohol and fruit; with a nice freshness balancing the alcohol. Tannins a bit "drying"; nice structure and well balanced anyway, persistent. Wide entry and long finish.

One of the epic vintages.
Vivid garnet red.
Intense and complex and fine nose: centered on "wild" notes: Leather, game, and then ripe fruit. At the end spices (cloves) and balsamic.
Nice structure of fruit, elegant tannins and good acidity. Overall balanced still to smooth. More "rustic" than elegant and decaying fast once opened.

To me the best of the 7
Intense ruby red..almost opaque.
Incredibly rich at nose, very fine: Coffee, cocoa, black pepper, tobacco, a bit of fumè. Ripe cherries and plums. Truffle hints at the end.
Full mouth: expanding and mature, but still with a vibrating character and Young. Thick silky tannin; good balance with a rich fruity mouth. large, deep and persistent.

Intense ruby red.
Intense and complex at nose, very fine. White chocolate, then red fruit: plum; Balsamic: eucalyptus and laurel. Hints of black pepper and grafite.
Great structure at taste. Silky tannins, maybe a bit shorter and elegant than 2004, but still young, wuth a good acidity and overall balanced.
Nice ripe fruit, persistent. Tannins a bit drying.

Intense ruby red.
Intense at nose: fruity at first: cherries; then spicy (nutmeg, tobacco) and balsamic hints.
Nice entry with a good acidity, and a tannin alive and kicking. Good structure, but too young to be elegant.

2004 was my favourite without doubt, with 1994 and 2007 following. A lot of people preferred 1997, but is a bit too "wild" for me, less elegant.
Interesting 1978, but I think some quotation in auction, over 500$ are just financial creations.
