Introduction

A larger trade tasting of many Italian wineries within the Winebow/Locascio portfolio.
Having recently been to VinItaly I saw some familiar faces but was also happy to try and meet several new wineries.

Flight 1 - Argiolas (2 notes)

Rep was one of the Argiolas son's. The write-up gives much credit to Giacomo Tachis (father of Sassicaia, Tignanello, and Solaia) credit for the quality and encouragement of native varieties at Argiolas.

Clearly very different from mainland Italian wines. There is an extra fruit component, less of the dried fruit, and more of a Rhone-like influence. The wines were handled in a way to provide more definition and buffered by strong oak. Would like to taste more to fully develop a clear opinion of these wines.

Red
2011 Argiolas Korem Isola dei Nuraghi IGT Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
55% Bovale Sardo, 35% Carignano, 10% Cannonau; deeper color, garnet; nice sweet red and dark fruit, dark cherry, raspberry, almost fig, chocolate from the new oak; fine tannin, good structure, oaky, animal, ripe fruit; good, different.
Red
2010 Argiolas Turriga Isola dei Nuraghi IGT Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
Garnet core, clarity; spicy nose, oak, raspberry, musky cherry, a bit funky but very serious, ripe yet not overdone, cedar, cinnamon; firm structure, cherry, raspberry, slight bitter on the finish; very good.

Flight 2 - Castellare / Podere Monastero / Galardi (8 notes)

All at a table with an importer rep.

Castellare is a brand I have very little experience with. Owned by Paolo Panerai. Located in Castellina with vineyards 1200 feet high and above- some of the highest in Chianti Classico. Yields are very low compared to standards in Classico. I thought the quality was amazing. They had such elegance, focus, and purity of fruit this is a brand I really need to seek out. I find them similar to San Giusto a Rentannano.

Monastero is owned by oenologist, Alessandro Cellai (I think he works for Castellare). He only makes 2 wines: Pinot Nero (I don't know why) and a Bordeaux blend called Campanaio. The quality was good in both but I would need to evaluate more vintages and ones with age to give final deliberation.

Galardi is well known. I didn't realize they were in the Northern part of Campania far away from Taurasi. The winery is run by cousins of the Murena, Celentano, and Catello families. Their famous oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella gets much of the attention. Only one wine made only from Aglianico and Piedirosso. Low yields and small production from volcanic soils in NW Campania. Terra di Lavoro means land of work.

Red
2013 Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

2010 Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di S. Niccolò Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

2013 Monastero Pinot Nero La Pineta Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Flight 3 - Castelluccio / Poggio Scalette / Vadipiatta (7 notes)

Another multi winery table with some affiliation to one another. Served by an wholesaler rep.

Castelluccio is owned by famous oenologist, Vittorio Fiore. Emilia-Romagna. Wines were good and fairly inexpensive.

Podere Poggio Scalette was a historic Chianti estate, but the estate was abandoned after the owner died. It was revitalized when Vittorio Fiore purchased it in 1991. The plot for Il Carbonaione has grapes (Sangiovese clone called Sangiovese di Lamole) that are 90 years old. The wine of the same name was declassified from Chianti as Vittorio did not wish to include white grapes in his wine. A requirement that has since changed. It gets its name from the evidence of a historic charcoal pit, or carbone.

Tenuta Valdipiatta is owned by Giolio Caporali. Not sure of the relationship between this and the others, but I was really impressed with the quality. These were fairly inexpensive but really delivered good substance in the Sangiovese.

Flight 4 - Fattoria Le Pupille (5 notes)

Tasted with Clara Gentili, Elisabetta's daughter.

Thought I would be tasting the same things as VinItaly, but these were mainly all different. The wines seemed to show differently here in the States. The fresh, fruity, and polished quality that I loved so much in the wines there seemed to evolve into more leather, vegetal, and dried fruit character here. I understand that these wines put on more weight and dried fruit with age but these seemed really changed for 1 vintage difference.
I was still, however, a big fan of the wines.

White
2013 Fattoria Le Pupille (Elisabetta Geppetti) Maremma Toscana Poggio Argentato Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana
Straw; fresh, straw, almond, not as expressive as you'd expect for these grapes but dry fresh and clean is always welcomed.

Flight 5 - Giuseppe Cortese (5 notes)

Tasting with Gabriele Occhetti. He is the son-in-law and he does marketing for the family business. Very nice person and seemed very accommodating. Sorry to have missed their booth in Verona.

The wines were fantastic, the Nebbiolos especially. The light color and extraction did not deter these wines from having loads of aromatics and character. Charming and elegant are descriptors I'd use but that is also very common for Rabaja in general. Prices are great, wines are really well made, and they hold back older vintages which makes for a treat.

Red
2014 Giuseppe Cortese Dolcetto d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba
Just bottled; see through magenta; tart, bright sweet red and purple fruit; simpler but tasty.
Red
2014 Giuseppe Cortese Barbera d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

Red
2012 Giuseppe Cortese Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Very pale red with pink rim; very sour red fruit, slight orange; nice freshness on the palate, some grip, like how this is youthful but there is no candy; delicious.
Red
2011 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabajà Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Dull crimson, pale rim, see through light extraction; beautiful nose, classic, elegant, substance; soft tannin, dried sweet cherry, floral, rose, cedar; delicious.
Red
2004 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Crimson core with orange rim; dried cherry, sandalwood, cedar, noble, penetrating, cinnamon, caressing yet firm tannin, menthol on the finish; delicious, don't want to spit this.

Flight 6 - Mastroberardino (8 notes)

Winery established in 1750s by Pietro di Mastro Berardino. Mastro was a title given based on his winemaking skill.

I heard (not at this event) there was a split between them and Terradora di Paolo where the best vineyards were lost. That may be the case. The quality of the reds left me a little wanting but I am a fan of their whites. Good substance and drive.

White
2013 Mastroberardino Mastro Greco Campania IGT Italy, Campania, Campania IGT
Pale color; fresh, sharp, pear, apple, floral, slight lime, good weight, elegant, salt on the finish; quite nice.
White

White

Red
2008 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Italy, Campania, Taurasi DOCG
Crimson core with orange rim, clarity; rose, cherry, sweet plum, aged, oak; dense, firm tannin, reminds me of Nebbiolo of the South, lower acid but enough; good.

Flight 7 - Tenuta di Fessina (4 notes)

An Etna winery I was not familiar with. Did recognize the rep as Valentina Davide whom I met at Summa15 where she poured for Montevertine.

Owned by winemaker Silvia Maestrelli in 2007. In the village of Rovittello.

The wines were really well made. Very clean and composed more in line with Terre Nere. The Musmeci Bianco was brilliant. Any white Burgundy fan would love it.

White
2013 Tenuta di Fessina Etna Erse Bianco Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
Pale color; tart, floral, green fruit, mint; good acid, fresh, mineral, volcanic, long, penetrating; good.
White
2013 Tenuta di Fessina Etna Musmeci Bianco Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

Red
2013 Tenuta di Fessina Etna Erse Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
Typical 80/20 split of Mascalese/Cappuccio; very pale rose color, see through; candied rose and strawberry, cherry, volcanic; soft, drinkable, herbs, dried red fruit on the finish; tasty.
Red
2008 Tenuta di Fessina Etna Musmeci Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
Dull rose, some orange in rim, see through; dull nose, somber, rusty, dried cherry and roses; good structure and acid, lighter body; tasty, like an elegant Nebbiolo.

Flight 8 - Tua Rita (4 notes)

Visited this booth right at the end. Forgot that they were pouring these wines. Not really on the priority list, but the cost makes these rare to come across.

Founded in 1984 by Rita Tua and husband Virgilio Bisti. Obviously a favorite among critics. Very low yield and deep concentration of flavors is their goal.

The wines were good, but the pricing was a bit crazy. I don't know of many N. Rhone Syrahs that truly deserve a $300 asking price, let alone a Tuscan Syrah. The QPR in the Giusto di Notri is so much better than the Redigaffi.

Red
2013 Tua Rita Rosso Dei Notri Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
50% Sangiovese, 50% Cab/Merlot/Syrah; see through bright maroon; green edge to young Sangiovese fruit, simpler but good.
Red
2012 Tua Rita Perlato del Bosco Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Bright maroon; fainter nose, cherry, rose, long, good acid and depth.
Red
2012 Tua Rita Giusto di Notri Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Deeper maroon; depth evident on the nose, currant, green, smoke; great mouthfeel, nice tannin; great wine, thought it was better than the Redigaffi today.
Red
2012 Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Crimson maroon; pine, currant; tobacco, menthol, long, oak; good though needs time to come together; liked the Giusto di Notri more than this.

Closing

A good tasting with a nice variety of wines. Wanted to taste more but got there a little late. They also had no time afterwards as they had to pack up and go to Orlando.
