Flight 1 - Introduction (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1996 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
96 points
Very nicely developed and lots of drinking pleasure. Has started to shows some brown apple and mushrooms but still plenty of fresh and vibrant acidity.
A huge wine.

Flight 2 - Starting Whites (2 notes)

White
2009 Sine Qua Non On The Lam USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
93 points
Some honey and exotic fruits coming through and just enough acidity to make it acceptable.
A clear lack of acidity makes this wine a somewhat strange experience.
White
2008 Sine Qua Non Kolibri USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
92 points
Jammy exotic fruit with a huge lack of acidity. It still tastes nice but it seemed quite muted and a little strange on this day.
The oily fruit was to much without the acidity coming through. Should perhaps have been decanted way longer but that is just a guess.

Flight 3 - Older Bottles (2 notes)

Red
1996 Sine Qua Non Against the Wall USA, California, Central Coast
96 points
The wine is clearly showing its age and has notes of earthiness and smoke but still with a solid, but mature fruit core.
It is a great pleasure to taste a SQN with some maturity to the fruit but in this case it is perhaps not the best example as it was starting to show the tendency to be a bit tired.
Still a very solid and balanced wine

1997 Sine Qua Non Impostor McCoy USA, California, Central Coast
96 points
The wine is showing a little age but still with plenty of fresh fruit and a wonderful balance and acidity. This wine really shows me that the SQN wines age with grace and should be taken very seriously for that potential as well :-)
It does have a slight green tone to it but not in a disturbing or harmful way. Everything is well integrated and overall just a really wonderful wine with plenty of acidic structure that will make it last even further.

Flight 4 - Blind (1 note)

Red
2009 Alban Vineyards Syrah Lorraine USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
96 points
Alban style with jammy blackberry jam and plenty of vanilla and spices.
The wine is quite dense and nice if you like that style. Not a huge Lorraine but still a nice wine.
It did have an abundance of both sweetness and alcohol which didn't do it any favors in this vintage.
The lack of balance and structure made it seem a not very classic Lorraine and very more comparable to the Reva in this case.
Tasted as a blinder in SQN line-up so it did seem somewhat extreme and overly fruity but I still liked it for what it is.

Flight 5 - The Magicical Heat (3 notes)

Red
2002 Sine Qua Non Syrah Just For the Love of It USA, California, Central Coast
99 points
Very impressive wine with plenty of fresh and young blackberry/cherry fruit but also some beef, smoke, spices and vanilla. Everything is just mixed together with a wonderful acidity and tannic bite.
This is again a pleasure to taste this wine and it would be really nice to taste it even further down the road as it just keeps getting better. It is however drinking extremely nicely right now!
Just an impressive and beautiful wine that just lacks the final depth to reach perfection.

2003 Sine Qua Non Grenache The Inaugural Eleven Confessions Vineyard USA, California

This was really a bottle I had looked very much forward to tasting and it didn't disappoint!!
The flavors are incredible dark plum style fruit with a liqueur-style sweetness to it. Packed with impressive spices, smoke, roasted meat and vanilla.
Even though everything in and about the flavors of the wine can seem over the top, everything is just integrated in a perfect and very impressive balance.
This is just a stunning and mind blowing wine.
Red
2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Poker Face USA, California, Central Coast
98 points
Impressive with plenty of fresh fruit but also plenty of aged syrah flavors.
Very expressive at the moment and a wonderful pleasure to taste again. A beautiful wine!

Flight 6 - The Legendary Heat (3 notes)

Red
2005 Sine Qua Non Grenache The Naked Truth USA, California
99 points
Packed with jammy blackberry fruit but once again the wine seem to be in a fairly good balance due to the tannins and acidity.
It is a hugely flavorful wine with lots of depth and plenty of spice an vanilla. A very hedonistic wine.

2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah The 17th Nail in My Cranium USA, California, Central Coast
100 points
What an impressive wine!!!! The flavors are just stunningly beautiful and expressive.
Packed with sweet blackberry fruit, coal and smoked meats but also a refreshing note of fresh flowers.
The aromatics in this wine is just insane. For me this most likely one of the best SQN wine ever made.
Even though it has some many different facets and flavors in, it still has that magic balance which makes the wine true perfection.
An incredible wine and a true legend.

2010 Sine Qua Non Syrah Stockholm Syndrome Eleven Confessions Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
100 points
Packed with young blackberry fruit, spices, vanilla and smoke. A very impressive young wine which could turn out to be one of the great SQNs with more age.
Very young it is certainly a very impressive wine with an impeccable balance!
A real treat to taste this so very young!! A huge wine that can stand next to the best SQNs ever made!

Red
2005 Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
95 points
Impressive but difficult to assess next to so many SQNs.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
93 points
Slightly underwhelmed and disappointing.
White - Sparkling
1995 Deutz Champagne Cuvée William Deutz France, Champagne
95 points
An okay bottle but I had hoped for even more.. Still, a very solid performance.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay Mr. K The Noble Man USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
96 points
No real notes taken but an impressive depth and packed with flavors.

Closing

The best wine this evening was definitely up for discussion but for me it was without a doubt 17th Nail in My Cranium. It could in my mind easily justify a 100+ rating :-)
