Tasting Italian and Cal-Italian wines with good friends

Chez Soals

Introduction

The Soals invited me and my fiancee along with the Walkers to have some italian varietals at their lovely home. The food was excellent from the bruschetta to the minstrone soup to the pasta ragu dish to dessert. It was a gourmet meal! The food was great, the wines were very nice, but the people were awesome! Really enjoyed hanging out and hope to do it again soon.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

Dark red in color. Very ripe and fruity with black cherries and jammy dark fruit. The taste was sweet with a creamy long finish. Full bodied. Really enjoyed this wine. Compared to the 00 Brunello and the 03 Babcock La Moda, this definitely stood out as much better. Overall, a very fun wine that I really enjoyed!

Complete opposite of the Shafer Firebreak. Edges were starting to brown. Nose of meat, leather, tobacco, and earth. Not much fruit. On the palate, some dried fruit with mushrooms. Very herby! I can see how some people would like this but compared to the 1999 Brunello that was singing with fruit, I believe this wine must have been flawed somehow. It tasted 15 years older than it was but it wasn't corked. Still an interesting wine.

Dark red in color, smelled fruity when it was initially poured. The fruit was present on the palate too but their was an odd mineral, woodsy, olive taste that distracted from the wine. It was a combination of wine #1 (Shafer Firebreak) and the Val Di Suga Brunello (#2)....unfortunately, the combo didn't work. I think after a few hours, the wine fell apart quite a bit but when it was initially poured, it was a decent wine.

Tasted blind. Very light pinkish red hue. We knew this was old but not many people guessed how old. Paul said it was maybe 15...25 at most. Tannins were gone but there was actually fruit remaining but the craziest thing about this wine was that it was very balanced and smooth! Nose of toffee, orange peels, and what I believed was a bit of smoked bacon, drank beautifully. On the palate, more orange peel and bing cherry. The oldest wine I have had so far in my life. I was surprised to see it was from 1958. 49 years of age and it was still singing like a chorus member. I still can't believe how old this wine was. No funky smell either.

1999 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark red in color. Dark cherries, rich, nice finish. When revealed that this was a Brunello, my immediate reaction was that the 2000 Brunello I brought had something wrong with it. THis one seemed like a very young wine, yet had one more year of aging. Didn't take too much notes but I remember enjoying this. I pegged it as Italian and was correct.

Really light red/tawny color. I saw Ray pull the cork out. I was thinking this might either be the really old 50's wine he had or another 89 Spanna "nasty" wine that he made me drink last time. It was neither! Darn.

I thought it might be french or something and I'm sure I did make that comment but I had no idea this was a pinot noir. "This is no Kosta Browne" is what I said when I found out it was a pinot. Sour and woodsy, showed some coffee notes on the nose and on the palate, it was definitely cranberry like. Very interesting wine and at $8, it is a fantastic value.

THe cork was black and fell apart and the top of the cork had black mold. I thought Ray was trying to poison us haha but it was actually a very nice treat. Tasted older than the 58 Spanna as this wine's fruit is almost dead.

Light orange hue. Smelled like tobacco and shitake mushrooms with some earthiness. Sour fruit and soy sauce on the palate. Very interesting. I thought this might be pretty old as I guessed mid 70s due to color and smell. Very cool to try but best days probably gone!

Red - Sweet/Dessert
N.V. Rosenblum Cellars Zinfandel "Désirée" Chocolate Dessert Wine USA, California

Hard to score this wine as it was a nice dark red. Chocolate infused port and zin. Very interesting. Chocolate and cherry flavors. I used some of it as a syrup on the quadruple layered chocolate cake we had for dessert. Holy cow was that cake delicious...especially when I poured this on it!

This was a great dessert/sweet wine. Coffee infused? Probably the rarest wine I've had so far in my life. Not many bottles made. Poured in these grappa glasses so I thought the wine was probably 70 proof or something but realized it was a delicious dessert wine. Very delicious. Wish I could purchase a bottle but I believe it is sold out and the winery's library supply has almost run out. Hope to try this again when I visit next time. Yummy!!

Not overly sweet like some of the fortified Muscats that get 98 points. I would give this 95 but Parker might rate it 100.

Till next time!!

I never really had Italian wine before so this was a really nice experience. So there's more to Italy than just House Chianti at the local pasta shop! :)
