This was a fantastic evening of some truly outstanding wines all of which shined brightly. Thanks to everyone for sharing your luscious wines!!! And the food, the food Steven Brown, was quite splendid as well!
Flight 1 (2 notes)
White - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Grande Réserve Brut
92 points
pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Everything that there was in the previous bottle and then some. I love the style really, gives plenty of orchard fruit with minerality and not over the top in any way. Elegant and pure.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Varnier-Fanniere Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée St-Denis
91 points
Light gold color. drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. This hit me right tonight. I like the elegance of the the Fourny, but this shows in its own way with a power and verve. The citrus and apple, followed by the vivacious minerality and citrus pith,t really shines with a power and depth that can't be denied. Quite lengthy on the finish. I enjoyed this much more tonight. While still on the chalky side, it was much more diverse. 91+pts.

White
1996 Gagnard-Delagrange Bâtard-Montrachet
A fairly quick revisit on this wine; not showing nearly as well as the previous bottle. More advanced and while still interesting it shows its age too much.
White
2002 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots
91 points
Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. This was in pristine shape. An interesting contrast to the Boillot La Cras I brought. I love the toasted character with lemon and hints of pineapple oil on the nose followed by a nutty, filbert palate, toasted, lemon oil and good richness. 91+pts.
White
2009 Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Cras
92 points
light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. This was right in my wheel house tonight. I loved the steely minerality in contrast to the toasted oak of the Jobard. There is a purity on the nose with lemon and citrus notes followed by intense minerality that sustains everything. Bright and fresh as one would expect. Really nice purity showing well in its youth.

Red
1996 Louis Jadot Clos St. Denis
94 points
Medium maroon color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. This was just singing right from the start. I love the nose, everything I want with a sultry earthiness and potpourri of floral aromas, cinnamon, spices. The palate is wonderfully earthy with a light medium body, cherry fruit, deeply flavorful and sexy, with grainy tannins that say drink me now. Loved it. I thought this held up quite well through the evening, and didn't really feel it dropped off noticeably.
Red
2001 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg
95 points
Very dark red color. PNP, Drank 1+ glass over 2+ hours. This started out a bit more brood than the '96 Jadot, not quite as flashy, but it had a rather sensational evolution through the evening. More fruit, black cherry, black raspberry, intense baking spices, cinnamon, hints of vanilla. The palate is deep and concentrated, nicely textured a little oily, sour cherry, dark raspberry, baking spices, amazing power and intensity, citrus zest, and long intense finish. All night long this fleshed out more and more. Youthful and lively to say the least and one I'd love the opportunity to revisit in 5-7 years. 94+ to 95 pts.
Flight 4 (2 notes)
Red
1989 Château Gruaud Larose
95 points
Dark red color with a maroon hue, 2-3 mm margin. Pristine cork, opened 3 hours prior and splash double decanted to remove sediment right before leaving. The nose was singing right off the bat. That classic perfume of leather, florals and tobacco, very provocative. The palate is silky with a medium plus body, tobacco laden with grainy integrating tannins, leather, dark red fruits and cassis that take on more weight over an hour. Very elegant, classy as always. Probably right at peak now, this can still go for years. I love older Larose, it never disappoints always delivering a classic, elegantly aged Bordeaux.

Red
1989 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
95 points
Very dark purple red color. I'm not sure whether this got some air or not, i was thinking about 2 hours. This was such a treat to drink next to the '89 Larose and offered quite the contrast. The Pichon Baron was fantastic, hedonistic, and amazingly youthful in its display of black currant, black raspberry, and blackberry fruits layered with a sweetness and graphite kick. The last bottle I had was corked so this was wonderful to have again - thanks Steve! The Larose by contrast was lighter and elegant and more mature. Both wines were splendid and ultimately, the PB may become even better over the next 10 years. I don't want to have to pick between the two, i'll just drink them both. The PB is easily a 50 year wine and one I will make a point to follow over the next 25 years! 95(+)pts.

1991 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate
93 points
Very dark red/purple color. This kept getting better over an hour. Nice ripe black fruits, licorice, cassis, earth, lithe, dusty tannins, youthful, firmer tannins, excellent. 93+ pts.
Red
1998 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
92 points
Note taking had gone by the wayside at this point. Another excellent Bordeaux tonight though. Dusty and dark fruit, cedar.
