Introduction

Impromptu get together on a warm Chicago Friday afternoon.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2008 Adega Regional de Colares Colares Arenæ Portugal, Lisboa, Colares
95 points
After about an hour of air, the aromatics of salt, lime, and lemon really blossomed. The palate was bursting with exotic lemon and lime tones with some flinty undertones and lovely, airy floral notes. Easy to drink, and easier to fall in love with.
Rosé
2014 Shane Syrah Ma Fille Rosé USA, California, Sonoma County
89 points
A bright, and energetic rose with some nice cherry, cranberry, and mineral tones. Nice balance...right in the zone.
Red
1999 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
92 points
A traditional approach to Crozes-Hermitage. Clayton mentioned that compared to more modern CH, this didn't "have the gloss" of many of the wines coming from there today. This was edgier, more meaty, more earthy - almost like a young Cornas. It's the kind of syrah I like.
White - Sparkling
2002 Marguet Champagne Grand Cru Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
I hadn't been familiar with this producer before today. Tons of ripping acidity (which i love) with a really complex flavor profile of biscuits, pears, cherry, white florals, and apples. Very nice.

Pulled right from the cellar, this needed some time in the decanter to flesh out and warm up. Beautiful claret, with an earthy/smokey nose with lots of old Bordeaux character. Elements of graphite, red fruit, roses, & soot blended together very nicely. Yum.

White
2007 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
90 points
Seemed a bit closed at first. Needed some air for the stony and floral notes to pick up some steam. Nice core of ripe lemon & lime with a hint of some pear, too. In a good spot after some air.
White
2013 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
89 points
Tasted so much more sweet than it did in January. Don't know how/why that was, but this seemed to have less balance and more roundness than I remembered. That said, this is still very good. Nice pineapple, tangerine, and mango tones with some nice airy florals. In a perfect world, I would have loved this to have a hair more acidity.

1978 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley

So good, and from what I could tell, in perfect balance. Aromatics were deep, somewhat savory, and dark. Layers of earth, cherry, earth, and spice were woven together seamlessly. Palate was vibrant and fresh with nice acidity and soft, sweet tannins. Big fan of this.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1975 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
A very clean and clear Rieussec with charming honey, peach, pear, tangerine, & coconut. Loved the exotic profile, and the sweetness, while there, was certainly dialed down a bit. Liked this a lot.
