N.V. Champagne Fleury Champagne Fleur de l'Europe Brut France, Champagne

I actually quite liked this more thought would. The nose is nicely correct and middle of the road in style. Open and fragrant neither young nor mature. The nose reveals pleasantly rich with raw Sugar, notable autolysis via pastry dough, candied ginger and a core of citrus. The palate is tart and acidic but with excellent balancing sugar 7-8 g/l perceived to me. I am not always a fleury fan. Sometimes the dosage is too low for me but this was quite nice.

N.V. Bruno Paillard Champagne Brut Premiere Cuvée France, Champagne

August 2011 disgorgement. Purchased recently from an American retailer. Storage unknown. The nose on initial pop was a bizarre combination of onion skin, burlap, plastic and cheese rind. Despite that the palate felt correct and mature of toffee, lemon peel, baked bread and orchard fruit. After several hours of air the nose finally brought the pleasure of the palate showing the bready and toffeed notes.

N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne

Is there any other champagne that delivers all of the pleasure of this wine under $100? If it exists I haven't found it. This is from a batch with the new label, which proved just as mature as the previous. The nose really nice: rich and mature of caramel apple, marzipan, brioche, fresh pastry, baked bread and candied lemon peel. Leaning to the powerful, lightly oxidative side of things. The palate is just so excellently balanced with richness, elevated acid and sugar in the perceived normal range of 8 - 10 g/l, Just a lovely champagne. Medium plus finish.

2007 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Deidesheimer Hohenmorgen Riesling Germany, Pfalz

This wine features a really powerful nose of plastic pool toy, petrol, tennis ball, slate, pine needles and green apple. The palate is essentially dry, as advertised, with excellent high acid and a moderate finish replaying petrol, slate and green apple. I quite liked this and thought it might have been under appreciated.

2012 Ramey Chardonnay Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

A bit of a difficult showing here from Ramey. Tight nose. Even after we allowed it to rise from fridge temp and followed it over nearly an hour. Really all that came out were light whiffs of pineapple and vanilla. The palate reveals a notable toasty oak presence via vanilla and caramel with lightly tropical fruit notes. While the palate is on the fatter sweet side of Chardonnay, one redeeming factor was that the moderate acid balanced things reasonably well.

This nose on this wine is nothing short of stunning. Just a classic that is so very representative of it's region. The nose is of sour cherries, tar, light touches of soy, roses, black tea leaves, leather, light roast coffee, lavender, perfume and dried orange peel. Beautifully classic. The palate features integrating tannin and medium plus acid. The red fruit, dried orange peel and black tea linger on the long finish. Stunning! This is a reference point for the region and vintage.

I figured this would be a tad modern for my traditional palate, however hile dense and ripe there was charm to this young wine. Certainly potential for future improvement. It pours on the dark side for Nebbiolo with a nose that seems to just be coming around. Dark cherries, spice, tar and a light florality round out the moderately intense nose. The palate has the highest tannins of the night with moderate balancing acid. Solid young Barolo which I would peg middle of the road stylistically.

1999 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Nice showing from this maturing wine. A bit more ripe and dark than I might usually prefer, but a bloody and maturing note provides appeal for me. The nose is of blackberry, violets, lavender, black olives, smoke, ink, iodine and beef drippings. The palate is maturing with moderate receding tannins and moderate acid. Solid hermitage in the early stages of its drinking window it seems. Will certainly hold and maybe even improve a tad.

2001 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Peterson Family Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Phew! This was a monster! It's still fully primary with just a boat load of fruit in the typical Napa idiom. Not necessarily overripe, but just masses of concentrated fruit. The nose is of lavender, purple candy, blueberry compote and macerated blackberry. The palate replays the sweet fruit with low perceived tannin and low acid. Not rated as I just can't do wines of this style justice.

Identical showing to the previous bottle. This is a big, modern, pruney and port-like CdP. Just huge. It's inky dark and reveals a nose of blackberry, blueberry, kirsh, alcohol, prunes and LBV port. The palate is low acid, low tannin and high in alcohol. Not really my style.

2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I was quite taken with this. Probably the best showing I've ever had for a Clos des Papes. This pours lightly cloudy and a light shade of red with some mild bricking noted. The nose is of cherry, strawberry, wet hay, toasted wheat, dry soil, dried orange peel, wild shrubs, thyme and mild light spice notes. Quite a nice bottle actually. The palate shows sweet red fruit, moderate acid and low tannin and a middle-weight frame. Quite an appealing wine, though certainly short of stunning.
