Introduction

Yesterday, I planned on drinking a couple of glasses while watching late afternoon college football. I was going to re-cork and then my wife and I were taking friends to the Tribe-Detroit baseball game. Only, it was pouring out and had been all day. The forecast called for 95% chance of heavy showers. The other couple called and bagged it. My wife came down to tell me, and had a glass of wine. About an hour later, she bagged the game too, so we were staying in. Its rare to have a night home alone with just my wife on a Saturday. That called for some great wine and NetFlix bingeing. She does like her wines young, and with Andremily and Realm offers coming up, this was a great chance to make some cellar space. ;-)

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2012 Andremily Syrah No. 1 USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

I know this is coming up soon, so I thought I should check in on it. Purple in color. The nose is amazing. A 100 point nose for sure. Enticing aromas of black raspberries, slight vanilla and spice, some roasted meats, black pepper and some anise. On the palate. Amazing texture. One of the smoothest wines I have had in a while despite its youth. Lush, but not over the top black raspberry fruit. Juicy acidity. Complex. Long finish. Gets better and better. Only issue was my wife LOVED it and drank it faster than I did. I will try to hold my other bottle as this will improve I think.

2011 MacDonald Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

This is tight right now, so after one glass, I re-corked and will drink it later today. But that glass was really excellent at this point too. Purple with ruby swirls. The nose is old school top Napa. That is cassis, spice, slight bell pepper in a good way and a touch of cedar. On the palate, a great texture. More and more, I think this gives insight to ageability in young wines. There is plenty of cassis but also this tart black currant note on the palate that is both delicious and refreshing. It is very tight and took an hour in my glass to open (I moved on and came back to it later). Looking forward to tasting with a day of air.

2012 Realm Cellars The Bard USA, California, Napa Valley

Wow. Wow. For me, this was amazing. It got about an hour of air, but I am not sure it changed much. I am not sure how it gets better from here, but it might. Frankly, I was surprised how well this drunk young. Purple in color. The nose is great. More exuberant than the Macdonald. Cassis, blueberries, spice, and espresso. On the palate, there is an amazing texture. Juicy yet velvety and round. Lots of layers of fruit with some oak/coffee and earth. Each sip makes me want more. This has is clearly a young Napa Cab, but given that it is not overdone. Sadly, Jane and I emptied this one quickly too.

In the end, the game got postponed, so we made the right decision there too!
