Introduction

A first view of the 2014s from Samuel Billaud, a producer I really like in Chablis with all that minerality and seashell freshness.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White
2014 Samuel Billaud Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
Essence of Chablis at a great price - lots of saline, salty, minerally, chalky zip to this. Definately for those who like a bit of cut in their Chablis (which I do). Very good.
White
2014 Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
The zingiest of the 1er cru wines from this producer - this is all crackling acidity and pure, uncut mineral zing. Very taut with a lean frame ontop of some fruit that peeks through. Should be very good - right now this needs some time away in the cellar.
White
2014 Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
This stands out from the other 1er crus of this producer - beautiful balance of complexity, richness and saline minerality. Long long finish with a milky, soft centre but surrounded with a chalky, crunchy seashell frame. Excellent - truly excellent.
White
2014 Samuel Billaud Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Great value for a 1er cru here and this is layered through with all that crunchy seashell and lemon pie actions you would expect - there is a tickle of richness to the fruit to pull back the tanginess a bit. Beautiful balance and will age wonderfully - all crackling minerality right now - this sits in between the Butteaux and the Montee de Tonerre - the 3 wines give a perfect snapshot of the range of 1er cru profilles.

Closing

An extremely impressive set of wines at a superb price. These will join Droin as my Chablis producer of choice (given that I can't afford Raveneau)
