Introduction

Gotta say I love these these impromptu Wednesday events. Small group, five of us today until my wife got home, and the wines always seem to be spot on. This might have been the last hurrah for sitting on the deck and enjoying the day. Started at 1pm and wrapped up around 8pm under the warmth of the heaters.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Doussot Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne

Great rich pink color., Drank 2 glasses over an hour. This was simply delicious. Maybe not the most complex, but thoroughly enjoyable on multiple levels. The nose has red raspberry, hints of strawberry, and mineral. The palate is consistent with a light and almost delicate character, adding nice minerality and a clean finish. 90+pts.
White
2005 Louis Latour Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Light medium gold color. Drank 1+ glass over 40 minutes. I loved the nose on this, gorgeous lemon, lemon oil, spie, and some mineral. On the palate there is the same lemon oil and oily texture, so nice, along with a bitter nutty quality that is at once both interesting and vexing. Probably at a good point to drink my last bottles, and definitely better than the last bottle. And as an aide, i will say that there was not a drop left to share when my wife got home...ergo, it wasn't too shabby.

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. Wow, what a nice display, showing about as well as ever. Maybe not quite as perfumed as earthy as some bottles, but absolutely fantastic all around. The nose is wonderful with a perfume pungent floral notes, plenty of bright garrigue character, and a fair amount of dry earth that all showcase the cherry fruit. The palate is medium bodied, cherry, kirsch, garrigue, licorice, spiced, deep and rich, briary, so balanced and about perfect. Absolutely delicious. This is at peak now, but should hold for 5 years. Very dark red color. Decanted for 40 minutes, drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. Wow, this is in a great place. Probably ready on a PNP, but even better with just a bit of air. Amazing nose of earth adn glorious fruit, cassis, blue fruit, pencil lead, dried herbs, and a hint of tar. The palate displays levels of intensity, acid and fruit that resonate, fantastic tart dark berries, cassis, sweet fruit overtones, spice, round and impeccably balanced. the tannins are integrated and suave, and the finish is long and provocative. Fantastic, elegant and so enjoyable, perfect now, but will hold for 10 years. 94+pts. My and group WOTN.

Very dark red/purple, garnet hued color. Decanted for 3.5 hrs, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. 74% Syrah, 26% Pinot Noir. The displayed more sauvage initially, this seemed to dissipate and become more dark fruited with black cherry and lots of vanilla on the nose. The palate comes across as full bodied, not showing much of the 26% pinot noir blend, vanilla, black cherry, black raspberry, brambly, round and full bodied. The finish is medium plus and tannins are round and pleasant. This showed very well; an interesting blend, my main issue was the level of vanilla that seemed to dominate both the nose and palate.

Very dark red color. Decanted for 3 hours; drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. The nose has dark fruits, some roasted meat, white pepper, fruit. The palate has a full body, cassis, dark brambly berries, savory, raspberry, assertive tannins and pepper on a medium plus finish. Very good, showing fantastic with a nice decant.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass from 375ml over 30 minutes. This was back to what I expect from this bottle, showing well with good intensity, both on the nose and palate, nice acid, good spice, orange marmalade, mild florals, citrus, pineapple, hints of peach and spicebox. Long finish. It seems that the 375ml's are drinking well, but the 750's are maybe in that no man's land territory right now and need more time.

Light gold color. I've drank this now several times over a number of days. Initially, this needed considerable air to be enjoyable. Now after a couple days being open, and even longer yet, it shows pretty well. Clearly in need of more cellar time to really be optimal, this still displays the hallmarks of a nice white Bordeaux. The acid and spice is in place, with citric fruit and a deceptive aromatic quality that makes this intriguing. I wish I had a couple more to evaluate in a few more years. Hold.
