Introduction

About 60 wines were available to taste, mostly inexpensive and moderate priced. Had a dinner to get to, but I tasted as many of the more interesting ones as I could.

Flight 1 (15 notes)

White
2005 Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
90 points
Another good example of NZ SB. As expected, there is a lot of lively acidity and intense flavors of grapefuit and other citrus and tropical fruit notes. This has more fruit intensity than the Kim Crawford many have had. This is perhaps a better apertif, while the Kim Crawford is a better food wine as it is somewhat more restrained.
White
2005 Baron Patrick de Ladoucette Sauvignon Blanc Touraine Les Deux Tours France, Loire Valley, Touraine
79 points
My least favorite wine of the night. This had no fruit, no acidity, no minerality, and no flavor. Avoid.
White
2005 Joseph Drouhin Saint Véran France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Saint Véran
84 points
A light bodied wine with little acidity or fruit intensity. A bland wine that disappointed me even with only a $10 price tag.
White
2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Pouilly-Fuissé France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
87 points
Nice floral nose, but less interesting on the palate with light body, moderate acidity and somewhat bland with mured fruit.
White
2005 Michael Pozzan Winery Chardonnay Special Reserve USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
86 points
This did not strike me as a typical RRV chard as it had little acidity and lots of oak flavors. The fruit is not big, but not a bad wine, just average for its price point.
White
2005 Beringer Vineyards Chardonnay Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
This wine had too much oak for my taste, and overpowered the fruit. Better chards out there for the price.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé Sauvage France, Champagne
83 points
This lacked the fruit I look for in rose' Champagne and was even light on the acidity. Disappointing given the producer and how much I love rose' Champagne. Sold out the two cases quickly though as the price ($25) appeared a bargain to many.
Red
2005 Bouchaine Pinot Noir Carneros USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
89 points
Medium body with solid dark fruit and nice balancing acidity. Medium length finish and nice depth. A good pinot at this price.
Red
2003 Antinori Villa Antinori Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
87 points
A nose that starts with a little barnyard, followed by earthy and leathery flavors. Medium bodied with light acidity. A nice Sangiovese based wine, with cab, merlot, and syrah in the blend that make it better than most Chiantis. Not as good as '01 vintage.
Red
2002 Beringer Vineyards Alluvium USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
89 points
Nice intensity of dark fruits, on a medium to full bodied frame and a nice 20-25 second finish. Nice wine, but a little pricey for what it is.
Red
2002 Saint Cosme Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
87 points
Expected far worse given the vintage. It starts off very nicely with textbook N. Rhone flavors, but the vintage comes through as it is very soft and has a very short finish. Still an enjoyable wine that lets you down at the end.
Red
2003 Robert Pecota Syrah USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey County
90 points
A very nice syrah for the price. Rich dark fruit flavors with some oak notes on a medium body frame and a nice smooth finish. One of the better buys of the evening.
Red
2004 Copain Syrah Madder Lake USA, California, North Coast, Lake County
89 points
A well made syrah, in an understated style. Medium length finish.
Red
2001 Babcock Syrah Black Label USA, California, Central Coast
91 points
This was my favorite wine of the night. Very dark color with depth and intensity on the palate and a nice medium length finish. A very nice wine.
Red
2003 Salvestrin Cabernet Sauvignon Salvestrin Estate Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
90 points
Nose of currants and vanilla, and a fair amount of oak on the palate. Nice balance and good fruit intensity ending with a smooth finish of about 25 seconds.
