Introduction

Those who know me, know it is dangerous to casually invite me over for wine and dinner. Steve made that mistake and suddenly we have a CA Cabs. and steaks dinner at one of the great lakes in Minneapolis - Lake Harriet. Jennie & Matthew (Steve's Son) provided the conversation while Steve was Master of the grill. No joke - this was probably the best steak that I have had in several years. Dry aged goodness... wow. Intelligent conversation... even better.

Steve opened this bottle and he mentioned that it seemed somewhat similar to a Chablis and he was right. Scents of green apple, pear, a hint of melon with a nuance (and I do mean a nuance) of oak. This wine had good texture, a backbone of acidity, and finish that provided class. For comparative purposes this would be similar to a modern producer of premiere cru Chablis.
Red
2002 Realm Cellars The Tempest USA, California, Napa Valley

Vanilla, red and blue fruits made a compelling modern CA wine. What surprised me was that this wine was Merlot based. I initially thought that this was a Cab based wine, but the percentages on the bottle proved otherwise. The drawback to this wine is that this will be a short lived wine (another 3-5 years), but for current pleasure this wine is well worth drinking. Especially with some fantastic dry aged steaks.
Red
2001 Dominus Estate USA, California, Napa Valley

I think this wine is about 10 years from the big time. Pencil lead, ripe black fruits, smooth fine grained tannins, with a whips of tobacco created a heady aroma. It did not quite follow through on the pallet, but at this point in its evolution it is very tightly wound. A promising wine with lots of intrigue to follow over the next several years.

Jennie, not knowing my eating prowess, invited me back... anytime. LOL... I think there will be some future posts chez Steve Sigmond. Can't wait.
