Browns Suck, Wines Don't (Thursday Night Edition) Ferrand, Sinegal

My Basement

Introduction

This past Thursday, the Browns played the Cincinnati Bengals on national television. Johnny Football was getting the start as our other QB was having trouble breathing (I kid you not). In any event, I settled in to watch the game by myself. In continuing this seasons theme of BSWD, two bottles were picked that I could sample from and leave the remainders for more pleasant times over the weekend to come. Pop and pour with some light munchies.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Domaine de Ferrand Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Drank over two days. Better on Day 2. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, spice, slight floral notes, and saddle leather.Full bodied. Great texture. Good acidity. Medium tannins. On the palate, lots of boysenberries, with spice. This is a formidable wine now, but certainly enjoyable. It has a long life left, but for those who like CdP in this style, this is delicious. Enough acidity to hold up to food, but great sitting by the fire on a cool autumn night too.

I had this from barrel, but the bottles just arrived and I thought I would drink this over three or fours days. This is being written after day 2. Its a new winery and I knew this would not be ready so my expectations were tempered. This needs time but should be a great wine. Purple in color. The nose has cassis, chocolate, cocoa and some spice. Plenty of oak. Blind, i thought it smelled more like a great merlot than Cab due to all the chocolaty notes. On the palate, this has a great texture. On night 1, it was very tight, but on night 2, it opened up. There is still a ton of oak on it, so if that is an issue, give it time. Between the fruit, the balance and the texture, I have no doubt this comes together in a more seamless wine. I am glad to have a couple more of these.
