Flight 1 (9 notes)

White - Sparkling
1981 Pommery Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne

Golden mature colour, lots of small, proper bubbles.
Starts off with caramel, rye bread, fresh ciabata, even white pepper and quince. Later comes menhol. Very long on the palate, creamy, honey comb, caramelised suger, rye bread with honey, vinous, excellent balance even though the dosage seems higher than they are making it now. Probably concentration of 1981 goes hand in hand with higher accidity. Just loved it.

1981 Jean León Cabernet Sauvignon Penedès Gran Reserva Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

Bouquet of marzipan, vanilla, hint of menthol, initially also some chemical notes. With time develops notes of leather, meat, hotdog with cheese. Essence of silk on the palate, very elegant, only 12,5% alc., feminine and fresh. There's marshmallows and figs as well as cherry pip on the palate. Outstanding mouthfeel. What a pleasant surprise.

1982 Château La Tour de By France, Bordeaux, Médoc

Darker, more acrid than La Scala 1981. There's wet wood on the nose, herbs, overripe, stewed fruits, vegetal note of green paprica, a bit of barnyard. Slight heat on the finish, short finish, feels a bit dirty, not that clean and precise. Not that often do I drink '82 Bordeaux and while this was good, it wasn't that inspiring all by itself.
Red
1981 Antinori Tignanello Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Corked.
Lovely, elegant taxture to the wine, but corkiness didn't let us enjoy it properly.
Red
1981 Bodegas y Viñedos del Contino Rioja Contino Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

What an interesting botrytis nose resembling a Sauternes! Not only that, there were also blackberries, vanilla, fresh figs, spicy chocolate, iodine and even hint of brioche. Perfect integration of modern and traditional. Loved it.
Red
1982 E. Guigal Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

It had some signes of being faulty, I suspect the bottle wasn't in its prime condition. Meaty, pickle nose, some black pepper and dill. Lacking in vibrancy or nerve, very calm, albeit quite fresh and green. Gigondas of the same vintage was clearly better.

1982 E. Guigal Gigondas France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

A pleasant surprise. Lively, sweet vanilla nose. Fat, dried cranberry, meaty, autumnal leaves. Rusty finish, like licking a fresh wooden plank, some rusticity, but overall very nice for such a mature Grenache.
Red
1982 Quinta das Vinhas de Areia Colares MJC Portugal, Lisboa, Colares
82 points
Very dry and still tannic. Aronia and red currants. Salty, fishy, beetroot nose. This was not the best bottle, very variable.
White - Sparkling
2003 Françoise Bedel Champagne L'âme de la Terre France, Champagne
88 points
Characterisic grower champagne with a high content of Meunier (think red apples and heavy, autolitic nose of rye bread). Lush palate expansive, gastronomic, not for the faint of heart. The hot year shows as it feels borderline overripe. Don't expect it to be elegant, but wait for the power.
