Introduction

Thanks to Conrad for hosting another spectacular dinner for our annual 10 year retrospective tasting. As usual, great food (the whole-roasted pig was awesome!), conversation, friendship, and no better way to kick off the holidays.

Flight 1 (17 notes)

White - Sparkling
2005 Agrapart & Fils Champagne Grand Cru L'Avizoise France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
A bit darker in character and earthier than the '05 Taittinger Comtes BdB, with a little more oxidative notes, brown sugar, tea, and less carbonation than the Comtes. Good high acidity in the back end. Grown on clay soil in Avize, aged only in used barrel, full malo--this explains a lot. I found it a bit difficult to taste the Champagnes out of red Burg glasses though. I am a fan of drinking bubbles out of white Burg glasses, but I think the big glasses did not focus the delicate aromas enough, and the wide rim made the entry too diffuse. Nice bottlefor sure, but not truly exciting. EWG 10 years on tasting.
White - Sparkling
2005 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne France, Champagne
93 points
Bright, yellow cherry, lemon, white peach notes, slightly more ripe than the previous vintage with dare I say almost a candied lemon note. Clean, delineated, very good acid level, persistent, fine bubbles, and fresh. Drank out of red Burg glass which does not focus the nose enough, and the broad rim doesn't focus the entry enough either. Prefer white Burg glasses. This needs time. EWG 10 years on tasting.

White
2005 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett Germany, Nahe
90 points
Nice, clean, candied/crystalized fruits--peach and lemon, pure, a bit simple, straight, but delish. EWG 10 years on tasting.
White - Off-dry
2005 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
Really lovely, pure, silky mouthfeel with candied green apple, light petrol notes, good intensity, barely hitting its stride at 10 years though. Very nice, but lacked a little weight and length compared to the Haag sonnenuhr auction. EWG 10 years on tasting.
White - Off-dry
2005 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Auction Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
Very similar/same in flavor profile to the Brauneberg Juffer normal bottling, but this had a slight nuance more of a petrol note, slightly more weight, and longer finish. Beautiful. EWG 10 years on tasting.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Gaudichots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
92 points
Dark ruby, a bit dull color, somewhat brooding, unfiltered; dark savory notes on the earthy side with black cherry, plum, savory spices; nice fuller mouthfeel, good acid, but quite tannic. I liked this but didn't love it. This was a bit of a bruiser and earthy, and I think needs 5-10 more years. EWG 10 years on tasting.

2005 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
Ruby red, lovely red cherry notes, juicy blackberry, subtle pinot spice, tangy but great depth and youth still. Classic Volnay, and in really good shape. did not get obvious signs of oak in here. EWG 10 years on tasting.

corked. EWG 10 years on tasting.
Red
2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Lovely red fruits of cooked strawberry, cherry, raspberry, fine, silky mouth with subtle garrigue and licorice. 14%. Very nicely done, all 3 a great flight (with Beaucastel and Pegau). EWG 10 years on tasting.

2005 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Darker fruit than both the Beaucastel and Clos des Papes--black cherry, black raspberry with tar, lavender, a bit of barn/animale fur (brett), but not over the top. Rich slightly fuller palate with more tannic structure than the Beaucastel or Clos des Papes. Great version of this This was very good. 14.5%. EWG 10 years on tasting.

2005 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Lightly stewed red plum, black cherry, lavender, garrigue, and light white pepper; silky fine entry, medium + body, fine chalky tannins, softer and rounded at this point; good balance at 14%, dusty herbs and cherry in the finish. EWG 10 years on tasting.

2005 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Soft cassis, blackberry, sweet pipe tobacco, very silky, elegant, lovely with a touch of vanilla oak; excellent concentration and balance. Doing really well. Would love to try in 10 more. EWG 10 years on tasting.
Red
2005 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Black-purple color; intriguing nose of earthy tobacco and leather with typical blackberry/cassis, but so pure, delineated, great character and balance. Very structured but not heavy, this was the Pauillac to Araujo's Margaux. This will go the distance. EWG 10 years on tasting.

2005 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Morisoli Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
This was sort of a typical fruit driven Napa Cab that was well made, but with not much dimension to it IMHO. Black fruits, short on character, a bit sweet ripe fruits. Not my style, and it got blown away by the Montelena Estate and Araujo in my opinion. 90-91. EWG 10 years on tasting.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Very pretty yellowy-orange color; great pure nose of ripe apricot, honey and chamomile and marmalade and average dose of botrytis; medium creamy mouthfeel with honey/toast/wax/petrol; decent acidity, but slightly lower than normal. Very nice but maybe just a touch weighty, maybe even slightly cloying, which tends to work better with the very salty Roquefort rather than the softer St. Agur. EWG 10 years on tasting.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
flawed
Darker amber; this was quite earthy, slight molasses, brown sugar, low acidity. Faulty IMHO, but still very drinkable and probably about 89 pts. I think just a bit prematurely aged, or the 375's had a transport issue at some point. Came from 2 375's. EWG 10 years on tasting.

White
2002 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Auxey-Duresses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses
93 points
Medium darker yellow with gold hues; Very aromatic with very intriguing contradictory nose of reduction and slight oxidative quality but with a concentration of flavor or depth that was uncanny. Apricot pit, straw, apple skin, limestony minerality start to come to mind. Great balance, everything in place, good lift. It had a "wanna be oily" texture but actually lighter weight on the palate, which seems to be the primary thing separating this village wine from tasting like a Grand Cru. Very cool and very thankful to Conrad for pulling this for 3 stragglers left after the dinner to polish off. EWG 10 years on tasting.
