Introduction

A great dinner with friends at Quince.

Flight 1 - Pre-dinner wines (2 notes)

At my place. Both were showing very well: The Verget is very consistent and drinks superbly with excellent complexity. The La Jota I've had only a handful of times so far, but it has come into its own. A pleasure to drink and an advantage of having a well aged cellar.

White
2002 Verget Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes des Minots France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Coravin 1/23/16: Medium-golden color; nose is aromatic, butterscotch, caramel, slight peach and pear; palate is full bodied, medium to medium-plus acidity, medium alcohol, slight oxidation but well balanced, fruit is fading; medium to medium-long finish. Very nice, near or maybe a half-step down from my last bottle, drinking well now. These were fabulous values on release and have aged remarkably well with only one bottle so far out of most of a case that was premoxed. 91-92
2/7/16: just like the note above. This wine is a real pleasure. 92
Red
1997 La Jota Petite Sirah USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Pop and pour. Ruby with bricking appropriate for age; nose is aromatic, gamey and spicy, blackberries, brambly stems; palate is medium bodied, tannins well integrated but definitely still have a presence, medium acid, medium alcohol (14.1%), some limited black fruit in the background, fades a bit through the midpalate; medium finish but low on fruit concentration. This is excellent, perhaps a half-step better than my last bottle, but the notes are very similar with a highly aromatic nose, nose>palate, limited fruit on the palate, slight hollowness in the midpalate. This is still a superb value for Howell mountain petite syrah (sirah) and a joy to drink. Surprisingly, this is a food wine. 91-92
1/24/16: Held up very well with a nose that is just as complex and interesting; palate is similar as well with maybe a bit more cherry fruit, good structure. My remaining bottles will last at least 5 more years, though it is drinking well now.

Flight 2 - Quince Wines (6 notes)

The 1989 Cheval Blanc was brought by a generous friend. The 2003 Branaire Ducru was my contribution.

1993 Schloss Schönborn Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling Auslese Germany, Rheingau
90 points
Quite a golden color; aromatic nose with minerality; palate is light bodied, medium sweetness but medium plus acidity that is tingling and provides excellent balance, slight white fruit; medium finish. Very nice aged riesling with just the right amount of sweetness. 89-90
White
2012 Rene Lamy Chassagne-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
89 points
Aromatic nose with lemon-lime, some butter, minerality, complex nose; palate is full bodied, medium-plus acid, fruit and flavor fades a bit through the midpalate; medium finish. Overall excellent, especially on the nose. 89-90+
Red
1989 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Medium ruby with some bricking; elegant nose with some floral, earthy, very elegant, slight spice; palate is full bodied, integrated tannin, blackberry fruit; finish is medium length. Very nice and elegant, but I was expecting more cabernet franc green and a bit more aromatic conplexity. 91
With 30 minutes of air this developed great aromatic complexity with more spice, nutmeg, great complexity; palate is very nice and elegant. A step up from before. 92
Red
2003 Château Branaire-Ducru France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Deep ruby; aromatic nose with rich blackberry, young, spice, slight graphite; palate is full bodied, rich blackberry, rich but not at all overripe, good persistence through the palate; finish is medium-plus length. Very nice, especially for the price, though this is still too young and has 15 years ahead of it. 92+
White - Fortified
1973 D'Oliveiras Madeira Verdelho Portugal, Madeira
92 points
Color is deep caramel; nose is aromatic, raisins, caramel, spicy smoke, nutmeg, coffee; palate is off-dry, high acid, caramel, chocolate; long finish. 92
