Flight 1 - From bottle (4 notes)

No notes on the rosé, sorry.

Red
2005 Pax Cuvée Moriah USA, California, Sonoma County
Pepper, some upfront stemmy, green elements that need to integrate, cherry, earthy, with good minerality. Chewy and nicely structured, but much more delicate than the syrahs. I really like where this is going since last fall's open house.
Red
2005 Pax Syrah Cuvée Christine USA, California, Sonoma County
Ripe blackberry/cherry perfume, toasty oak. Big Blue/black fruit on the palate with graham cracker. Good acidity, and quite tannic. Good for what it is, though it's not my preferred style.
Red
2005 Pax Syrah Walker Vine Hill USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Spicy dark fruit, toasty oak nose. Rich in the mouth, with lots of deep, concentrated sweet purple syrah fruit. Good acid, sticks out a bit currently but not a concern. Light tannins, super lush, fairly approachable. To me this tastes the most typically California-like of these syrahs, and it's also the least interesting.
Red
2005 Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
Spicy oak nose, green olive, dense red berries. Tight but drinks pretty well, tannins are approachable.

Flight 2 - From barrel (1 note)

The 2005 Griffin's Lair barrel sample ran out before i reached it, alas...

Red
2005 Pax Syrah Cuvée Keltie USA, California, North Coast
Barrel sample. Stemmy veg aromas, dark fruit, licorice, very earthy with dense, chewy tannins. Really impressive structure. For me the most interesting syrah in the lineup today, although i missed the Griffin's Lair.
