Tasted February 27, 2016 - February 28, 2016 by The Vines That Bind with 682 views

Flight 1 - Day one (13 notes)

White
2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
91 points
Pale straw colour in the glass. Extremely tropical, pineapple, mango. Very creamy, rich, some salty minerals. Vibrant, sharp, super young. (91-92).
White
1999 Coche-Dury Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
92 points
Classic Coche Mersault profile - Smoky, sulphur, like the LeFlaive matchstick but way more intense and electric. Soldering smoke and electricians tape. White florals. A beautiful piece of work the provides very pleasurable drinking. (92-93).
White - Sparkling
1985 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon France, Champagne
94 points
Great sulphur, classic Dom brioche, pretzel, and bready notes. Showing lovely age but with loads of starfruit and strawberry providing energy and power. Chalky texture. Vanilla and toasty oats. Recently Disgorged, consensus was early '90s before the Oenotheque program took off. (95-96).
Red
2002 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
94 points
Big black cherries and menthol. Eucalyptus. Roses and rose stems. Slightly vegetal but in a pleasant way. Big boulders for minerality. Sweet espresso. Huge but holding back just now. Far more earth than the Dujac BM enjoyed alongside, denser fruit right now. Sensational nonetheless.
Red
2002 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
94 points
Black cherry halls, ethereal fruit but with big dirty underbrush and soil coming through. Tart cherries. Explosive and lively. Very expressive. Bright fruit. Dark, intense, and focused. Sparkling minerals. Just massive but showing absolutely perfect. Seems like this will go for 100 years but is too good not to enjoy now. Best results probably ahead but total dynamite right now.
Red
1990 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
95 points
Stewed red cherry, red and black liquorice on the nose. Dark and intense palate. Very ripe. Approachable and plesurable. Red vine tomatoes. Ketchup even. Pastels, medium dry red cherry. Some molasses. Curious, slightly different notes from last time although both bottles were from the same generous collector. Tasted at altitude so possibly somewhat off.
Red
1990 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
95 points
Wonderful nose of dried red cherry and cranberry, dry underbrush, barnyard, pastels, flowers, complex, amazing... Big energy in the palate. Fruit is fully mature but not fading at all. Spent coffee grounds. Dark but ripe and beautiful. A clean and pure look at Chambertin. Beautiful drinking.
White - Sparkling
1964 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon France, Champagne
95 points
Caramel, Stonefruit, vanilla bean, stoney, rocky, coffee, caramel, cappuccino. Still so crisp and fresh. Crunchy vanilla bean. Vanilla extract straight from the vile. Honeyed grains, cereal grains. Spectacular finish. Honey oats. A special bottle and amazing drinking.
White
2005 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Fresh, young, light, fresh cut green grass. Coconut. Dried coconut shavings. Supremely rich. Young with great vibrancy.
Red
1937 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
97 points
[Magnum] Still deep crimson in the glass. Wafting bouquet of granite, graphite, charcoal, gamey raw meat, blood. Heavy lead. On the nose this tingles the same way that blue cheese does the very first time you experience it. The wine hits your tongue through your nostrils before you even sip on it. Penicillium, farm, barnyard: Extreme funk in the best way you could hope for. Minerals are still showing. Finish is spectacular. If blind would have guessed a legendary but much younger vintage like '82 or maybe '61. This just can't be this good... smells bigger, more expressive, more alive, more animal, than anything smelled in Bordeaux before. Palate is sensational as well but doesn't fully live up to the nose. Wow, what a show.
Red
1953 Pierre Ponnelle Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Not a perfect bottle and pretty sparse notes: Alive but not breathtaking. Soft red cherries. not overly expressive, alive and enjoyable, not flawed, not gone, but not glowing.
Red
1962 Marey-Monge Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
93 points
Ruby colour. Pretty but subtle nose of roses, eucalyptus, menthol, and softening black cherry. If the nose is subdued the palate absolutely explodes but fades over time. Slightly madarized. It's alive but this is its last legs for sure. Roses.
Red
1964 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
95 points
Immense underbrush, farm, barnyard, and hay on the nose. Simply magic on the palate, tannins melt away delivering fruit power yielding to iron-laden mineral and soil tones. What a beautiful and special bottle.

Flight 2 - Day Two (12 notes)

White - Off-dry
1971 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Hattenheimer Nußbrunnen Riesling Spätlese Germany, Rheingau
89 points
Orange brown in colour. Orange zest, molasses, and candied oranges on the nose. Some florals. Ethanol just barely hanging on. River rocks. Sweet caramel. Chai teas, spice. Cork disintegrated quickly so this may not have been the perfect bottle. Absolutely worth finding and trying again. Not to mention the coolest wine label ever.
White - Off-dry
1994 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
Beautiful ethanol and petrol, lemon lime. Fresh squeezed lime. Tingling palate, sparkling minerals. Some tropics. Whipped honey. Really beautiful. Creamy. Super clean. Kept coming back to this as it was just such a pleasure to sip. A beautiful illustration of aged Riesling.
White - Sparkling
1985 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil France, Champagne
97 points
incredible brioche, yeasty, bready, sulphur, eggy. Sharp, fresh, and super clean. Slightly darker, heavier, and more developed than the 1990 Clos du Mesnil enjoyed a few months ago, but still drinking like a lucid dream. Perfect condition. Breathtakingly gorgeous. So soft but full of flavour. Cereal grains and honey. Big sharp clover honey. Another incredible experience with this Clos. Absolutely worth it.
White - Sparkling
1990 Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
96 points
Supremely fresh. Egg whites. Probably the driest champagne ever tasted. Sulphur. Mousse is unreal: light and airy with fine effervescence throughout. Something quite musty hanging in the background. Almost as strong as the '85 Clos de Mesnil opened alongside. Truly special.
White
1988 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
White flowers, acacia flowers, and creamy / whipped honey. Briney salinity is all but gone. Big minerals on the palate, slatey and stoney. Lengthy singing finish. Good acid. Terrific.
Red
1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
96 points
Brooding red and black cherry and smouldering smoky embers on the nose. Explosive on the palate with a major dose of underripe cherry and oak. Elegant and soft in some looks but any subtlety at this point takes the backseat to massive fruit flavour and power. Cigar box and damp tobacco spice emerge with time. New leathers. Some metallics on the palate as well. Undeniably complex and well built but ultimately young and powerful just now. This wine was described as "obnoxiously good" and "amazing every time" by others.
Red
1924 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
96 points
[Magnum] Nearly as good as the '37 Lafite Mag last night. Red cedar, teas, spice, farmy underbrush. Fat on the palate and still totally hedonistic. Drinking like 80s. Tannins are still alive and providing excellent structure. Gorgeous finish. Mature currant, blackberry, and blueberry. You can really chew on this still. Very alive, tons of horsepower. Guess the wines from this chateau never slow down, this is still intense. Tannic. Classic Las Cases. Spot on and amazing. Big. Recorked in 1974.
Red
1922 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Beautiful bouquet of rose petals, soft strawberry and raspberry fruit. Powdered sugar, vanilla. Supremely elegant and delicate. Light red cedar bark. Haunting, phantom-like. Soft but completely alive and dances on the palate. Lovely finish. Still as pretty as ever. Perhaps psychological but the house style still seems to show on these '20s Bordeauxs.
Red
1922 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Deep crimson in the glass. Strong farm / barn nose, still great to drink but possibly a little too rustic for some. Quite vibrant on the palate and still has big tannins. Tingling minerals through the palate on top of mature and robust currant and blackberry.
Red
1942 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Leathers, oily pastels, gamey meats, stoney minerality, musky and penicillium notes. Meaty, duck pepperoni. Pleasant mints and herbs on top. Soft and elegant but short of ethereal. Still a pleasure to drink.

Red
1978 Bouchard Père et Fils La Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
92 points
Intense nose of dark and strong steeped teas, some espresso notes. Big and beautiful on the palate with robust red cherry fruit. Big, spicy, and strong drinking right now although it can be revisited years later.
White - Sparkling
1996 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses France, Champagne
94 points
Fresh, creamy, croissant dough. Vanilla. Tremendous palate- young and sharp with intense effervescence. Excellent finish with honeyed cereal grains. Awesome to drink right now but too young. Will obviously continue to go for a decade. Really interested in finding some older vintages of this to try out now.
