Introduction

Since we hardly have any experience with wines from Oregon and Washington, all wines were tasted not blind.

White
2011 Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay Canoe Ridge Estate Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills
87 points
In the bouquet ripe yellow fruits, candy flavors and a bit stinky. On the palate a full bodied wine, a bit fat, with butter candy, ripe yellow fruits, vanilla, a touch of sweetness and also medium acidity. The wine has some length. The European palates around the table thought the oak was dominating the wine too much. I hold the middle so I don’t score the wine extremely low.

White
2010 The Four Graces Pinot Gris USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Slightly aromatic bouquet with litchi, anise and some yellow fruits. On the palate flowers, litchi and marzipan. There is some acidity and sweetness and bitterness in the finish. Compared to European Pinot Gris, this is quite special and not really what I (and the rest of the tasting group) appreciate. No score.

Red
2012 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
85 points
In the bouquet red fruits like cherries, raspberries, strawberries and some smoke. On the palate a sweet start with some metal impressions, ripe red berries and cherries, very mild acidity and mild tannin. Opinions differed quite much in the tasting group. For my taste there was a little lack of acidity and bite in this wine to make it interesting. But nothing really wrong with it.

In the beautiful bouquet a lot of dark berries, licorice and beautiful oak. On the palate dark berries, a lot of sweet spices like cinnamon, chocolate, leather, beautifully fresh acidity and soft tannin with still a pleasant bite. Maturity stage now and the next 5+ years. Without any doubt the WOTN. 92 -93
