A weekend of nice wines.

Introduction

It was a nice weekend here on America's north coast. The temps made their way into the 70's for one of those beautiful spring days that can't really be appreciated if it doesn't come after a long winter (even an easy one like we had here). Add to that some Easter festivities and the NCAA tournament, and we opened some nice bottles. A couple of them really needed to wait for Day 2 to show what they had. Nothing wrong with that. Put the cork back in and find something more ready.

Pop and pour and drunk over two nights. It was better on night 2. This had been more open so it appears to be in a semi-shut down phase right now. Purple in color. The nose has black currants, tar, charred wood and slight dill. On the palate, this is very deep. Not real ripe but certainly not under ripe. Nice texture. Good acidity. Hold or give it a lot of air right now. I would have scored it 92 or so after night one.

A friend brought this over. He said it had been opened and Caravined since January. Hard to judge , but it was remarkable. From Magnum (I believe that is all they make it in). Ruby/purple in color. Very accessible. The nose has cherries, strawberries, some baking spices and floral tones. On the palate, great texture. Already showing a depth and complexity not often seen in younger wines. Delicious cherry and dark cherry fruit with spice and vanilla. Long finish with lots of fruit on it. Given everything, i.e. young age, coravin, it was a great showing.

Opened and this was a hot, oaked mess. Ok, that is a bit harsh, but I was not happy and after drinking a glass, the cork went back in. Opened again on the following night, gave it a half hour of air and boom! Great wine. Every sip made me say wow. Inky purple in color. The nose is deep with black raspberries, roasted meat, black pepper and a bit of wet leather. On the palate, there is a soft texture that is seamless. Layers of depth with fruit and a meaty quality. Nice acidity. Long finish. Delicious, complex and beguiling (on day 2). Glad we waited.

Screw capped. Light golden in color. This was our first glass outside of the spring (after a day of yard work). Seventy degrees in March is enough to make most wines great, but this seemed great on its own. The nose is clean with minerals and slight lemon peel. Also a steely quality that I liked. On the palate, this is dry and full bodied. Lots of minerals, some of that lemon peel quality. A clean and deep quality that serves it well. Nice finish. With air, the fruit emerges a bit more. Long finish.

An interesting take on Zin. No a big monster Zin. That is not to say elegant or Bordeaux like. It is a more unique expression. Ruby in color. The nose has cherries, licorice and rhubarb. Not big. There is also a lot of minerality. On the palate, medium bodied. Cherries and strawberries with some floral qualities. Almost like a Pinotesque Zin. Interesting. In the end, it is also excellent. Seems like it was in a good place. Pop and pour, it was open and didn't change over a few hours.

My third time trying this. Pretty consistent. Not very Amarone-like. It is good. I suppose like a solid Valpolicella. I think certainly at peak and not for much longer at that (if that). Purple/ruby in color. The nose has dark cherries and slight plums. On the palate, a bit drying. Cherries and dark cherries. Good acidity. A solid wine.
