Olde Wine Dinner 1925-1966

Introduction

A gathering of 10 of us to open olde wines and talk about history (lots of baseball trivia). Great food, great company and great wines.

Flight 1 - Chef's selection of 4 appetizers. (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
1959 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Piper Brut Extra France, Champagne
Out of a half btl and several were opened but most were flat. This was very old, sweet taste was better than a bad nose.

1974 Deutz Champagne Blanc de Blancs Vinotheque France, Champagne
Good nose, good bubbles feel on the palate, orange peel, good color

1975 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne France, Champagne

Tasty, Amber color, old nose which was developed and integrated. Nice flavor on the palate and had some vigor.

Flight 2 - Potato Leek Soup (2 notes)

Apricot almost syrupy color, high acid, green apple carmalization, delicious and God better in the glass and a fantastic compliment to the Potato Leek soup.

Initially old sneaker smell right out of the btl. Very deep Apricot color, needed time to develop and open in the glass, which it did. Clean finish, almost dessert like.

Flight 3 - Wild Mushroom Cannelloni and Homemade Ricotta (2 notes)

We also had a 1949 J Henri Remy Chambertin which had a wonderful color, great earthy smell and a great palate feel with a long finish.

Initially right out of the btl I thought this was dead. Allowed to breath and develop in the glass allowed this wine to show its classic structure. Rusty color.

Asian spice, light color and light on the palate as some if not all the fruit was stripped out. Still a great wine to have in the grouping.

Flight 4 - Scottish Salmon with Braised Lentils and Red Wine Butter Sauce. (3 notes)

Delightful, darker color, bricking. Half the group like the wine.

Wow. Delicious, great color with a wonderful mouth feel and finish. Tasty as the other half of the group liked this (birth year wine of Kenny's) with the Scottish Salmon.

Musty color and a bit corked.

Flight 5 - Braised Rack of Lamb with Parsnip Purée and Carrots (3 notes)

While the btl was old, the fill was way to low and thus DOA. Smelled like an old musty basement. It was a negociant bottling.

Nice nose, lighter color, bacon, spice, sweet finish.

Super color, deep coffee nose, good flavor with a really nice finish. Both glasses of '25 faded over time.

Flight 6 - Cheese Course (4 notes)

I remember blue cheese.

Lighter color, good flavor, hollow on the palate, so something was missing. Still great.

Darker more mature color and feel on the palate. With the cheese course, this was really a nice pairing.

Great opportunity to have a very good btl from an off year.

Flight 7 - Chef's Surprise (3 notes)

Some sort of milk dish that stood up to these great wines.

1827 Quinta do Serrado Madeira Boal Portugal, Madeira
First real Maderia experience. Dark and clean color, needed time to develope biut I can see the potential. Very good.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1929 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

OK, the fill on the btl was 4 inches below the cork which fell thru when I touched it. The wine was a treat, dark, molasses, very long finish, WOTN were some comments. I thought the evening was the best I have attended in a long time. Very happy and brought a taste home for Linda to taste.

Closing

A great evening put together by our host Kenny. Warm weather outside (72) and now this morning as I write this its 35. I am still savoring the wines from the '75 Taittinger, '47 Colnot, '49 J Henri, '25 Cos, all the Montrose, really olde Maderia and of course the '29 d'Yquem. Thank you for an outstanding evening.
