HdR Lunch #2

Hospices du Rhone

Tasted April 19, 2016 by Loren Sonkin with 357 views

Introduction

At lunch on day 2, there was a wide variety of wine provided to each table. A few people brought some extra treats as well. The highlight of the lunch is the auction that is used to raise money for future events. It was a lot of fun. It was a hot day and limited whites were provided. Those seemed to be drunk quickly at each table, but there were plenty of reds served chilled initially to go around.

Flight 1 (14 notes)

White
2015 Château de la Font du Loup Côtes du Rhône Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
88 points
Silvery green in color. Very clean wine. Minerals and slight citrus. Outside on a hot day, this was chilled and hit the spot. The bottle was drained quickly by us and other tables.
Red
2013 Domaine Madeloc Collioure Cuvée Serall France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Collioure
90 points
This was very nice. Going back to it much later, it had opened nicely. Also had Pierre Gaillard's name on the label. Good cherry and dark cherry fruit. Nice balnce. Lighter wine, this was served cold and it was refreshing. Better after it warmed up a bit.
Red
2013 Jada Vineyard Hell's Kitchen USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
88 points
Not bad. A new winery for me. Black cherries. Not real ripe but solid. Served a bit chilled worked well.
Red
2013 Brecon Estate Mourvèdre Paso Robles Estate USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
91 points
One of my discoveries on this trip was this winery, especially at the Closing tasting. This bottle offered up nice black cherries, slightly earthy. It was tightly packed and opened a bit in the glass. Good acidity and not a monster wine.
Red
2010 Mounts Family Winery Petite Sirah Petasera USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
90 points
Purple in color. earthy with black raspberries, slight oak. Sweet fruit. Tannic. Very tasty.
White
1998 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
94 points
Quite a treat to drink this. David Shiverick stopped at our table with a Magnum of this and generously poured us a taste. Golden in color. Fresh and vibrant. Floral nose, slight wax. Very smooth with slight orange rind on the palate. Deep complexity. Open for business. Still showing youthfully. A real treat.

2013 MCV Black USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

This was a ripe hot mess and that is something I rarely say about a wine. It burned. Not sure if this was a proper bottle but everyone at the table seemed to taste spit and dump quickly.
Red
2013 Pierre Gaillard Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
88 points
I am sure this was opened too young, but there it is. Black olives, black raspberries. Very tight on the palate. Much better on the nose. Would love to revisit in 5 years.
Red
2012 Nicora Syrah Shadow Canyon USA, California, Central Coast, York Mountain
91 points
Purple. Slightly meaty nose with black raspberries. very deep. Tight, needs some air/time. Upside potential.

Black cherries and black raspberries on the nose. Smooth attack turns very tannic. Good fruit. Needs some time or air.

This was quite good and above my expectations. I don't think I have had the winery but 2011 can be an issue. This was 14.5% if I read it right, which is certainly high for 2011. The wine is ripe with dark cherries but also showing a concentrated complexity right now. Long finish. I went back later and it was a bit better.
Red
2007 Paul Lato Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
95 points
Paul stopped at our table with a bottle and generously shared pours with us. The nose is earthy with black raspberries and red cherries. Sweet fruit that unwinds into layers on the palate. Great balance. I think the bottle had been opened and poured for a while so it had a lot of air, but was showing very well. Very generous.

Fizzy and bitter. I am assuming an off bottle with secondary fermentation of some type.

Not sure where this came from, I did not see the varietals on the label. It stood out as I doubt it is a Rhone wine. Drinks like a Bordeaux blend or maybe sangiovese. Maybe I am wrong, but that is how it came off. A bit earthy/musty with some red fruit. Cherries on the palate. Slight heat.

Closing

People were very generous at the auction and the hammer prices were well above retail which speaks to the quality of people this event draws. People just got swept up into the spirit which was great to see.
