Flight 1 - Dry River Pinot Noir Vertical Tasting (7 notes)

A vertical tasting of the Dry River Pinot Noir, bottles brought by Malerdos from NZ just for the tasting

Red
2014 Dry River Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
93 points
Shy in the nose, red fruit with some gamey notes, oaky frame, funky, needs time to clear up.
In the palate, the wine is rich, med body and med+ intensity, beautiful, red ripe small fruit, berries and cherries, nice acidity and mouthfeel, ends with a long finish.
Outstanding quality, shows great promise, hold rather than drink
Red
2007 Dry River Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
95 points
Beautiful nose, very clean fruit with great oak framing, nutty, roasted almond, walnut and sweet spices.
Denser in the palate than the nose, spicier, cinnamon sticks, there is a Brett funk too but only adding to the complexity, elegant yet powerful with a long finish.
Outstanding quality, this is a truly magnificent “old world” wine. 95

Different profile, more spicy than fruity, it also feels a bit tighter, a few flowery notes, sweet overall and decadent.
The palate is also beautiful, balanced, fine tannins, round, ripe red fruit, med to long very tasting finish.
Outstanding quality, drinking now or hold 92+
Red
2011 Dry River Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

The wine shows quite dense nose, big fruit red profile, spicy with layers of oak and nutty nuances.
The same profile in the palate, great ripe fruit, nice oak frame, beautiful velvet fine tannins, there is a tiny sweetness overall, mouthwatering tasty wine with long finish.
Outstanding quality, drinking now or hold
Red
2012 Dry River Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
90 points
Nose is showing med+ intensity, funky and ripe red cherries and berries, nice thin oak layers, ethereal and balanced.
Great palate, ethereal again, fruit upfront, a bit thinner in the midpalate, lacking the strength of the 2013 & 2014, balanced though, med/med+ finish.
Outstanding quality, drinking now
Red
2013 Dry River Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
94 points
Dense, thick nose filled with red fruits, smoke and earthy notes, forest floor, the oak is tighter but on the whole the wine is more extrovert.
Explosive in the palate with great fruit and oak texture, nice acidity, complex, fine tannins, great structure, hard to resist, utterly balanced, long finish.
Outstanding quality, drinking already but could hold

Flight 2 - Ridge Field Selection Geyserville Zinfandel 2003 (3 notes)

3 bottles from Ridge Vineyards, Zinfandel Field Selection, brought by K. Lazarakis . An excellent experiment on vine selection

Red
2003 Ridge Zinfandel Pronsolino Field Selection Geyserville USA, California, Sonoma County
90 points
The nose is much more evolved than the rest, dried fruit, herbs, earthy, sultana raisins, show signs of oxidation and Brett funk, chocolate and coffee and even chocolate with liquer in it.
In the palate, the wine is drying as well, a bit more aggressive, raisin-y, tannic, alcohol more upfront (15.2%), med finish.
Outstanding quality, drink now
Red
2003 Ridge Zinfandel Hearts Desire Selection Geyserville USA, California, Sonoma County
91 points
Big nose, powerful, full ripe red fruit, raisin, dates, some plastic nuances, damp forest floor and overripe in general.
In the palate, the wine shows again full ripe red fruit, sweet spice, cinnamon, nice oak frame, great structure, chocolate and coffee notes in the med finish. 14.9% alcohol but extremely well hidden.
Outstanding quality, drink now.
Red
2003 Ridge Zinfandel Picchetti Selection Geyserville USA, California, Sonoma County
92 points
The nose is explosive, full ripe red and black fruit, raisin, sultana, dried fruit, full spice showing a nice overall decadent profile.
The palate is quite more aggressive, pronounced acidity, sultana, dried red fruit, dates, chocolate and coffee bits, quite dense, alcohol infused (14.9%) long finish.
Outstanding quality, drink now and for me this is the best of the three Zinfandels
