Introduction

Prince organised this and, after the pleasure of my last Mont Redon tasting, I couldn't really resist. I dragged in a couple of the wine ark boys as well.

Flight 1 - Beetroot, goats cheese, witlof, candied almond, apple (2 notes)

Food did NOT match the wine in any way shape or form…I'd probably go with some kind of fish in some kind of cream sauce...meh.

White
2014 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Fresh, slight bees wax, peach and lemon, honey and slight almond meal, quite fruit driven. Warm but juicy, peach, slight honey, less wax on the palate, quite front to back of the mouth. Friendly. Hmm.
White
2013 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Sharp, spice, stone fruit, slight wet stone, cream but a little more savoury (than the 2014). With time and agitation a little more bees wax. In the mouth it's juicy and slightly tart with a touch of bitterness on the finish. Touches of crushed rock and lemon. Hmm.

Flight 2 - Chicken, ham, foie gras and hock terrine, endive prune and king oyster mushroom (3 notes)

Best with the CndP (oh yes) and Cotes du Rhone (uh huh) but the Lirac was a bit meh

Red
2014 Château Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
That baked earth Grenache scent…almost sweet red berries, spice, warm earth, cream…in the mouth it's juicy with fleshy red fruit over peppery spice, low intensity fine talc textured mid palate tannins. Finishes short and warm but perfectly pleasant if not a little anonymous.
Red
2012 Château Mont-Redon Lirac France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac
Spice, blackberry over red berry, slight spice, earthy elements, alcohol warmth, quite perfumed tinned peppercorns. Juicy peppery and spicy, a bit warm, bit of mid palate grip but still quite silky, not massively long. Hmm.
Red
2012 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Cream, vanilla, caramel, red over blackberry, peppery spices over baked earthy, lovely nose…balanced, not to heavy or alcoholic. In the mouth it's dense with red over blackberry, firm tannins, bit of alcohol warmth peppery spice, on the long finish. big, warm, welcoming. very nice. Pretty. yeah. yum.

Flight 3 - Roast strip loin of beer, duck fat tatos, fennel, carrots, red wine & madeira sauce (4 notes)

Other than the 10 the food beat up the wine. Meh.

Red
2010 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(From Magnum) a little muted and with agitation polished red berry over black pepper spice, oak but barely discernible. In the mouth it's juicy and spicy with a touch of sourness but the fruit is ripe. It's bitterly spicy, tannins are fine, slight alcohol warmth but beautifully balanced.

Red
2000 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(From Magnum) Funky farmyard, biscuit, leather over red berries and cream…farmyard begins to blow off with time. In the mouth it's juicy, again with a touch of sourness like the 10, leather spice, tangy, slightly drying but fine tannins and alcohol warmth. Muted fruit. balanced and nice.
Red
1993 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(From Magnum) liquorice and gun smoke, sous bois, autumn leaves, leather. A little dried orange oddly enough. In the mouth it's leather with tight tannins, a little muted tired, a touch of sourness as well. Perhaps past its best or a little advanced.
Red
1980 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(From Magnum) Fully mature, baked earth, biscuit, leather, mushroom but not damp cellar, touches of almost rhubarb. On the palate this bottle has commenced its slow decline into vinegar, biscuity and tart but compelling none the less. With time, alas, it falls apart in the glass.

Flight 4 - Lemon syllabub, blueberry compote, biscotti (0 notes)

Two quite rare matches here:
mont redon marc blanc: smells like pear spirit - poire Williams - and tastes like grappa
mont redon vieux marc: smells like rough cognac underpinned by certain salinity. Palate is much of the same but with a certain sous bois.

Closing

Lovely messy drunken lunch. The 2010 from Magnum was probably the pick of the wines for me but there was plenty to enjoy and the food was pleasurable as well…
