Introduction

There is no theme. Every participant brings one or two bottles fully blind. The wines are split up in whites, reds and sweet wines (if those are brought). No other information. The idea is to go from light bodied and/or old to full bodied and/or young. So randomly someone tells he/she wants to start with the first wine. Then the rest follows when he/she thinks it is a proper moment to pour a wine you brought. And surprisingly enough this system works quite well in most cases. There are no flights. We taste the wines one at a time.

Flight 1 (23 notes)

White
2008 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
91 points
Bouquet with yellow fruits and caramel. On the palate a full bodied wine with yellow fruits that can handle the oak, good minerals, also good and firm acidity and bitterness in the finish. Ready now and it can last a few more years as well. Excellent wine.

2008 Rudi Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Kollmütz Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Pnp the bouquet shows a lot of toast, but with some air that disappears. There are ripe yellow and tropical fruits and aromatic spiciness. On the palate a fresh start, yellow fruits, butter, caramel, some spiciness, a pleasant touch of sweetness and good citrus acidity. Good length as well. Beautiful wine! Mature now and this can last for several (3+) years.
White
2010 Rijk's Chenin Blanc Cape Winemakers Guild South Africa, Coastal Region, Tulbagh
90 points
The bouquet is a bit locked, but shows some minerality. On the palate a very tasty wine with white and yellow fruits, a touch of sweetness and bitterness and a good dose of lemon and lime acidity. Beautiful and full bodied wine. 90+ for today.
White
2007 Wine & Soul Douro Guru Portugal, Douro
89 points
Bouquet with melon and strangely enough some strawberry as well. On the palate minerals, good citrus, oak bitterness and some reductive impressions. Maybe this doesn’t sound too good, but it is certainly a very ok wine. Have one more bottle and I will probably drink it this or next year, so there will be a final follow up.
White - Off-dry
2004 Dönnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
flawed
Aromatic bouquet with flowers and some petrol. On the palate unfortunately slightly corked, but it was still good enough to taste and get an impression. A lot of sweetness and acidity and in beautiful harmony with each other. Tropical fruits as well. No score.

Tonight’s blind note was almost identical to the one I wrote 8/24/2014. I can add a touch of petrol in the bouquet and candy flavors on the palate. Very tasty and clean wine. 87 – 88
White - Sparkling
N.V. Dosnon Champagne Recolte Brute France, Champagne
90 points
In the bouquet apple pie and yeast impression. On the palate a bit reductive with firm lemon, minerals and bitterness. Quite dry. Concentrated firm bubble. Tasty and a good length.
Red
2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
88 points
In the bouquet red fruits and some red bell pepper. On the palate small red berries as well. Candy acidity. Juicy and good wine, but I was less impressed compared to my tasting note of 2012. Ready now and the next few years.
Red
2008 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
In the bouquet cherries, some oak and autumn impressions. On the palate mainly red, but also dark forest fruits, a firm amount of acidity and sticky tannin. Beautiful wine. This wine will benefit with 4 - 6+ years of ageing. So around 2020. 89 - 90

2006 Niepoort Douro Voyeur Portugal, Douro

In the bouquet very ripe red berries and possibly even some VA. The same ripe fruits on the palate, some spices like clove, chocolate and medicine. A touch of sweetness and soft acidity. A bit reductive as well. Soft and still slightly sticky tannin. Ready now and no hurry.
Red
1996 Jean-Luc Colombo Hermitage Le Rouet France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Blind note like the one of last month, different source. Completely different experience. Tonight the wine had a beautiful bouquet with autumn impressions and a touch of pleasant barnyard. On the palate soft and ripe red berry fruits, sweet spices and silky soft tannin, fine acidity and a bit drying in the finish. Beautiful wine and completely ready now.
Red
2003 Sottimano Barbaresco Cottá Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
90 points
Beautiful and expressive bouquet with blackberries, plums, chocolate, earth and autumn impressions. On the palate a lot of chocolate, earth, some sweetness, good fresh acidity and quite sticky tannin. Overall the bouquet as well the taste are quite mature, but as a contradiction there is that firm amount of sticky tannin. That makes this a special wine and tonight’s bottle was not a bit too old yet, but I don’t dare to predict the future.
Red
2008 Les Celliers de Meknes 1er Cru Château Roslane Morocco, Meknès-Fès, Les Coteaux de L'Atlas
88 points
In the bouquet dark and red forest fruits, some bacon and barnyard impressions. On the palate the dark berry fruits are almost sun boiled but still ok. Also chocolate, earth and autumn impressions, a touch of sweetness but also good acidity. Mild tannin which is also a bit sticky and has a pleasant bite. The overripe fruits keep the score relatively low, but this is a very good wine from Morocco.
Red
2006 Lidio Carraro Quorum Grande Vindima Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, Serra Gaúcha, Vale dos Vinhedos
90 points
Deep and mature bouquet with dark forest fruits and beautiful oak. On the palate ripe red fruits, sweet spices, chocolate, vanilla, a touch of sweetness and also good acidity. Slightly sticky but overall mild tannin. The most beautiful wine from Brazil I ever tasted. 89 – 90
Red
1996 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Beautiful, exclusive and mature bouquet with still cassis and other dark forest fruits, cedar and some pleasant barnyard and oak. Same on the palate, some toast, chocolate, beautiful acidity and soft tannin with still a good bite. Great wine and fully mature now. It will stay on this level for another 4 – 5+ years or so, but to be honest; imho the drinking window in CT until 2027 as it is now is maybe a bit too optimistic.

2000 Les Fiefs de Lagrange France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Mature bouquet with still some ripe red and dark forest fruits, sweet spices, blood, chocolate and a touch of barnyard. Same on the palate. Mainly ripe dark berries, juicy acidity and round tannin with still a good bite. The bouquet was more mature than the wine showed on the palate. A very pleasurable wine now. Ready now and probably for at least 5+ years. Hope to taste again around 2020.

2005 Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Expressive bouquet with dark forest fruits, sweet spices, some smoky oak and a touch of barnyard. On the palate juicy dark berries, a firm amount of sweetness, but also good acidity. Round tannin. The wine is in its maturity stage now and will stay there for a few more years.
Red
2005 Errazuriz Viñedo Chadwick Chile, Maipo Valley

Bouquet with smoke, tobacco, vanilla and other sweet spices, red and dark berries and some rose hips. On the palate soft red and dark berries, sweet spices again, some pleasant sweetness, good acidity and tannin. A beautifully round and harmonious and complex wine. Open for business, but in fact still very youthful. I hope I can have the patience to wait until 2020 before pulling the cork of my last bottle.
Red
2004 Mas Martinet Priorat Clos Martinet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Fortunately I had this wine earlier this year from a perfect bottle. This bottle was extremely corked.

2009 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Beautiful bouquet with red and dark forest fruits, sweet spices and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate beautiful dark and red forest fruits as well, plums, earth and some autumn impressions. Beautiful acidity and good, round but powerful tannin.. Full bodied and a good length. A very fine wine with finesse and good complexity. Early maturity and lovely already. Will reach maturity around 2020 and might be even more complex by then. 92+ for tonight.
Red
2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
91 points
Beautiful bouquet with a lot of good dark forest fruits and some beautiful oak. On the palate juicy dark fruits, licorice, some mint, sweet licorice root, beautiful acidity and still youthful, soft and round tannin. Beautiful wine. Mature now and still some room for more time in the bottle. 2018+
Red
2005 Tardieu-Laurent Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

In the bouquet minerals, blood, bacon and some sweet fruits. On the palate the same fruits, some oak, good herbs and spices, medicine and chocolate. A firm amount of sweetness and also a lot of good acidity. Beautiful tannin. A beautiful and complete wine with a good concentration. Early maturity now and around 2018+ probably showing even more complexity and finesse.

Mature bouquet with red berry fruits and some nutty flavors. Same on the palate. Fairly full bodied, a good balance between acidity and sweetness, some nutty flavors and round tannin. Although not really great, this is a very pleasurable wine.
