Older Bordeaux Evening with Friends
Les Nomades - Chicago IL
Tasted May 26, 2016 by Burgundy Al with 401 views
Introduction
Great dinner of older Bordeaux with a great group of gentlemen who have been enjoying Bordeaux for decades. Great and interesting wine with a fantastic meal by Chef Roland Liccioni and the top notch service the restaurant always provides.
Flight 1 - Sauteed Langoustine (1 note)
White
2009 Hospices de Beaune Corton-Charlemagne Cuvée François de Salins
92 points
An excellent Hospices wine. Ripe, tropical fruit with nutmeg and allspice, but with the acidity and mineral textures to retain elegance and balance with good length. Drinking very well now with the ability to age.
Elevage by Bouchard Père et Fils for a barrel purchased by Allan Bulley and friends.

Flight 2 - Halibut with Truffle Mousse and Foie Gras broth (2 notes)
Red
1947 Château Figeac
Great color, mid-shoulder fill. Quickly decanted and served. Fully mature sweet black fruit with spice and plenty of leather and roasted meat to start. I liked this when first poured, and while intriguing nuance continued to emerge over the course of the evening, this was on a gradual decline once poured.
Red
1955 Château Mouton Rothschild
94 points
Quickly decanted and served. Bottle with great color and very top shoulder fill. Black fruit with cigarbox, cooked mushroom, some leather. Firmly structured and powerful to start, some more mature fruit emerged with more time in glass, this went from "very interesting" to "very tasty" over the course of several hours.
Flight 3 - Du of Lamb Loin and Shank with Gnocchi (2 notes)
Red
1961 Château Pavie
Fully mature with lingering black cherry and lots of forest floor, tobacco and meaty spice. Very nicely balanced and elegant. Remained persistent for several hours, fading/shortening slightly at the end of the evening.
Red
1966 Château Figeac
Fully mature black fruit, roast meat, lots of earth, and a few rough edges on finish. Very enjoyable.
Flight 4 - Braised Wagyu Short Rib with Morels and Sauce Periguex (2 notes)
Red
1976 Château Cheval Blanc
93 points
Base neck fill. Ripe fruit throughout, slightly sweet, nicely fresh. I like the concentration best here, with moderate acidity, length and nuance, but certainly a star for the vintage.
Red
1989 Château Mouton Rothschild
93 points
Black currant and plum with cigarbox. Dense and meaty. Still brooding despite several hours in decanter. Impressive length. Upside from here.

Ripe with plenty of black fruit and some cassis. Good concentration, moderate finesse and length.
Red
1990 Château Figeac
Ripe black cherry and plum with some background liqueur and very good spice notes. Good depth and balance at the same time, with a good burst of energy on finish. Very pleasurable right now.

Base neck fill. Dried apricot with moderate sweetness which led to a balance I really enjoyed. Moderate intensity and length. Very elegant and enjoyable finish to the evening.
