Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
1997 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
92 points
Best aromatics of the first flight with a lovely nose reminiscent of Bordeaux. Rich fruit but also quite rustic with some roses on top. Fruit is pretty explosive and vibrant on the palate. Great structure, still powerful, good integration. Lengthy finish.
Red
1997 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
91 points
Not as expressive a nose as the ’97 Red Rock Terrace enjoyed alongside, somewhat more subdued and a little denser. Dark chocolate. Touch high on tannin with less balance and integration than the Terrace. Still has lovely damp earth and soily notes.

1997 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Highly expressive and pretty nose. Lighter berry fruit. Surprisingly not as showy as the Red Rock Terrace or even the Gravelly Meadow of the same year right now. Bigger on the palate and not ready for drinking just yet.

Flight 2 (5 notes)

Red
1994 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Good nose but not quite as expressive as the flight of ‘97s beforehand. Palate doesn’t totally sync up to the pretty nose here. Tannins still hanging around but mostly integrating nicely.

1994 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Comparable to the ’97 Red Rock but with even better development, beautiful and subtle. Big strawberry, black cherry with menthol, and sugary red cherry too. Palate is amazing and everything has integrated beautifully. Great drinking right now.
Red
1994 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
Somewhat volatile, high and unstable acid. Hopefully this is just a bad bottle. Super high pitched. Vinegar.
Red
1994 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Lake USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Very pretty, very floral, highly expressive nose of soft berry fruit, cured meats, and some woody tones. Quite unique, very cool fruit, quiet but with terrific complexity. Nice development, fascinating to try and special to drink.
Red
1994 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Microclimate 2 Red Rock Terrace USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
92 points
Quite unique, very cool fruit but also somewhat sweaty and stewed berries. A little peppery, very savory, immensely flavorful. Sauna wood and quite dry. Interesting to try.

Corked.

Curious nose of coffee grinds, rye and rye whiskey, and some new leathers. Not overly expressive. Fruit is damp and mature on the palate as well as a touch stewed. Tannins are very grippy. A good one to drink now.

1985 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Developed and tertiary nose with some spices, medicinal, and big crushed rocky minerality. Fully tertiary on the palate and shouldn’t be left any longer. Good eucalyptus but overall rather thin and on the decline.

Flight 4 (5 notes)

Red
1976 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
93 points
Very fresh nose, secondary with tertiary looks, rustic and dusty nose of drying berry fruit. Plenty of ripe fruit left on the palate with good eucalyptus and menthol too. Cool black berry fruit through to the finish. Excellent integration, balance, and structure. A rewarding bottle of wine.
Red
1975 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Beautiful nose of soft red berry fruit. Light and very approachable / drinkable right now. Not quite as complete as the ’76 beforehand but still well rounded with dense and deep fruit. Tannins are what is holding this one back.
Red
1974 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Big fruity nose of red and black berry fruit, currant fruit, and intriguing and complex notes of acrylics and pastels. This is beautiful with damp rustic earth and fully mature fruit. Slow smoldering finish with red cedar. Very good.

Doesn’t give up a ton on the nose at first but opens into another beautiful glass. Reading very fresh. Good on the palate too with nice acidity and a big long finish. A lot of tannin here too though. Very good but would prefer either the ’75 or ’74 if presented the choice.
Red
1972 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Wonderfully expressive on the nose with damp soil, farmy and barnyard notes, acrylics, and pastels. Expressive and complex. Curious notes of red rocky soil and black teas. Very well integrated right now and offering a bit of everything. Tannins strike a touch at first but are ultimately fine. Spectacular.

Flight 5 (4 notes)

Red
1978 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
93 points
Red and black fruit on the nose with minty and menthol notes. The palate is so rich and vibrant, amazing that this is 38 years old. Good wine to drink right now. Superior to both the ’78 Gravelly Meadow and Volcanic Hill.
Red

Herbal nose but not yet full on vegetal. Green bell peppers on top of plenty of red and black fruit. Reading very young and fresh and cannot believe it is 38 years old. Not quite as well put together as the ’78 Red Rock Terrace but definitely a better bottle of wine than the ’78 Volcanic Hill.
Red
1978 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Good nose of mint, menthol, and some smoke on top of rustic earth tones. Palate is good as well but this ends up being unduly tannic. Good but a little big and tough.
Red
1978 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Lake USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Pure, clean, and very fresh nose of ripe red and blue berry fruit. Smells fairly juicy actually. Deep and rich fully developed fruit on the palate, very expansive. Fruit, but more advanced, like a juicy tomato. Beautiful on both nose and palate. Long robust finish. A very unique and special wine for sure.
