Introduction

With Chris in town, I wanted to open up some wines with serious potential and hope for the best. Thankfully, all of the wines showed correctly, which made for a very enjoyable evening.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne Extra Quality Brut France, Champagne
88 points
Serious acidity on this one with notes of yeast, toast, and nuts. I nice start to the evening but overshadowed by what was to come.
White
2012 François Chidaine Les Argiles France, Loire Valley, Vin de France
89 points
Bright and crisp with plenty of acid. This one showed clear minerality with stone fruits and shades of something a touch sweet, perhaps honeysuckle. The finish on this was pretty short though. A good wine and a solid buy.
Red
1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts-Doix France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
93 points
A wonderfully complex nose on this wine. I detected floral elements, light red fruits, and a touch of barnyard. On the palate, this was a big wine with red meat, dark fruits, and the same floral notes. The finish is quite long and utterly enjoyable. A big and almost hedonistic wine that was a pleasure to drink.
Red
1970 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Despite an upper shoulder fill and a completely disintegrated cork (even with the durand in hand), the Mouton showed completed correct. All of the typical tertiary elements were there but balanced by light red fruits and dried herbs on the nose along with plums, a slight sweetness that some thought reminiscent of coconut but seemed to me to be more like a candied red fruit. The finish was epic on this one and it paired quite well with the lamb stew. A memorable experience.

White - Fortified
1983 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal Portugal, Madeira
93 points
This was decanted for seven hours prior to dinner and was only just opening up when served. I should have decanted it a day prior. A wonderfully complex nose of almonds, figs, and caramel. On the palate it was more of the same, yet I felt there was more hidden in this wine that further air will bring forth. I'm glad to have some of this remaining for further investigation.
