Introduction

A legendary evening packed with wonderful and stunning wines from both Piedmont and Champagne but also some amazing Port wines.
All wines were tasted blind and revealed after each flight.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
1989 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
flawed
Lots of soy and a little leather/coffee but not a lot of flavor. Pretty dry.
After the bottle was revealed it was clear that this bottle must have been defective!!
Red
1989 Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Nice and elegant raspberry fruit but also a little cabbage. Fairly nice but also a bit plain.
Red
1989 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Chalky and mineralic nose. Slightly watery and light fruit with a touch of coffee and leather. Has a funky taste of salt-water also. Disappointing..
Red
1989 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Lovely fruit with a good intensity and elegance. Nice touch of rose petals and a long red currant aftertaste.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1989 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame France, Champagne
92 points
Seems quite old and is dominated by brown apples but also a good amount of acidity.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
1990 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Light raspberry/cherry fruit with still with a good flavor depth. Has a lovely touch of camphor.
Lots of acidity and the fruit is very present but still with an impressive elegance. med-long aftertaste.
Red
1990 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Lovely tannin and acidity driven wine. Very classic and has flavors of leather and rose petals.
Does however seem to decline a little bit.
Red
1990 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
Juicy red plum fruit with a touch of leather and camphor. Good flavor depth while maintaining a lovely balance.
A beautiful wine that will continue to improve. 95p-96p
Red
1990 Domenico Clerico Barolo Bricotto Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
Juicy plum and a little asphalt, camphor and plenty of complex spices. Still very young and will definitely improve.

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
1978 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
94 points
This is all about elegance and purity of flavors.
Packed with rosewater, and florality. Impressive stuff.
Red
1964 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Leather, coffee, fresh and clean flavors. Impressive but not as nice as the 78 :-)
Red
1964 E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
A little fragile but plenty of impressive and intense flavors of mint, sewer and dirt.
Medium aftertaste but overall a very nice wine.
Red
1978 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Riserva Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
97 points
Still young raspberry/cherry fruit with an impressive complexity.
Packed with notes of sewer, rose petals and plenty of spices.
Long and clean aftertaste that is persistent and intense.
Extremely impressive wine!!!!

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Ca d'Morissio Riserva Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
96 points
Incredibly intense flavors, dark plum and medicine cabinet but also different spices.
There is some oak that is hiding some of the other things and overall it does seem a little bit singular in its profile but I could certainly feel that there was more to this wine beneath its youthfulness.
The aftertaste is only medium-long and should improve with more age.
Still a very young wine but clearly also a wine that will improve a lot over the next many years. A great pleasure to taste this!
Red
2002 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
98 points
Extremely young but also quite complex. Packed with flavors of dark plums, medicine cabinet, dark spices and aromatic rose petals.
Very pure and clean flavors with a huge acidity and overall structure.
Unbelievably intense and just an amazing wine! Will continue to improve over the next couple of decades!!

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
94 points
Overall a really nice bottle of Champagne but it failed to impress me when served blind.
There was plenty of green apples and good structure but I didn't find the usual oxidative notes. At least not as intense and expressive as usual.
It certainly was a good wine but I had really hoped for more intensity and "nerve".
The bottle was disgorged in 2012.
White - Sparkling
2006 Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Nature Cuvée Starck France, Champagne
92 points
A solid wine but not really as bone dry as expected. It was served blind.
A young Champagne at the moment with green apples, yeast and some sea-water but also a bitter grape touch in the aftertaste.
Nice wine but not spectacular. Would however like to try this again :-)

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red - Fortified
1966 Niepoort Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
96 points
Fresh and balanced wine packed with brown sugar, vanilla, camphor, orange peel and still a touch of fruit.
Overall it is very complex and impressive. A true meditation wine and real legend!
What a wonderful treat to taste this wine from a bottle in great condition.
It was served blind but in my opinion also a bit too warm. Served colder it would have reached 98-99p IMHO.
Red - Fortified
1966 Niepoort Porto Colheita Portugal, Douro, Porto
95 points
Quite sweet orange peel flavor and lots of melted brown sugar.
Complex flavors of also vanilla, coffee and leather.
A huge wine but alcohol is dominating a little bit too much.
It was served blind but in my opinion also a bit too warm. Served colder it would have reached 97-98p IMHO.
Bottled in 1978.
