Superb Kabinett, that is certainly at full maturity. Wet slate mineralogy, bright and supple acids and rather complex. Beautiful entry and mid palate, though the finish feels as if it may be drying slightly.

N.V. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut France, Champagne

Drunk after 10 years in a cold (max 11 degrees, C), this was quite excellent. A vibrant fluffy mousse, a lot of bottle development , but also retaining good clarity. While I prefer my champagnes to be fresh, this was an example of a nv wine developing pleasing characters through cellaring.

2007 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Lush, sweet and ready. Fine acids lend great definition. Citrus and white peach. not convinced this will improve with further time in the bottle , but is absolutely delicious.

Dusty nose. Characterful and herbal. Mineral and concentrated. Very earthy quality is a pronounced aspect of the wine.
Red
2009 Lochiel Estate Merlot Malbec Mangawhai New Zealand, North Island

Ripe and herbal nose with considerable black pepper notes. The wine is completely dominated by charred oak. It lacks generosity and finishes lean. The fruit quality is pretty but overwhelmed by the oak, ultimately reminding me of old fashioned reds from NZ.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2011 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Close to extraordinary, this wine has a exuberant, lifted and exotic nose. Perfectly balanced, with flavours that suggest lemon curd and creme brûlée. Amazing lightness for all of its sweetness - this is brilliant wine that is drinking very well in 375ml bottles.
