Spanish Mixed Bag, Summer of 2016

Tasted July 2, 2016 - July 15, 2016 by wineamateur with 332 views

Introduction

A mixed bunch of whites, reds, rosés and stickies, mostly bought from la Cabaña de Saura, El Algar, Murcia. Some vernice reds, in particular.

Flight 1 - Whites (7 notes)

White
2015 Telmo Rodríguez Godello Valdeorras Gaba do Xil Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras
87 points
Nice Godello. Good as an aperitif or with seafood. Clean, fresh pear and white peaches. Well balanced in the mouth.
White
2015 Adegas Valmiñor Monterrei Minius Spain, Galicia, Monterrei
88 points
Exuberant grapefruit, apple and pear on the nose. Good body. Just a hint of (not unpleasant) tartness on the finish. Nice wine and GV
White
2015 Bodegas Merencio Ribeiro L'ombre Treixadura Spain, Galicia, Ribeiro
78 points
A mysterious bottle, bearing neither vintage nor a clear indication of producer. (No mention of Merencio, but only BM SL.). It does bear the initials of winemaker Jorge Perez and seems to be the current release, presumably 2015. 12% ABV, down from the 13% reported for the 2014.

I wanted to like this much more than I did. There was an attractive whiff of scrumping apples on the nose, but on the palate this was dominated by a sickly off-dry taste that I just couldn't get past.
White
2014 Juvé y Camps Penedès Miranda d'Espiells Spain, Catalunya, Penedès
86 points
Curious nose of flat cava and toasty white burgundy. The toast predominates on the palate. A perfectly serviceable oak-aged Chardonnay. 12%.
White
2015 Bodegas Bleda Jumilla Pino Doncel Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
75 points
Some Sauvignon Blanc typicity, but overripe for my taste, rather nondescript and with a somewhat sickly sweetness
White
2013 Bodegas Mitarte Rioja Blanco Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
76 points
Barrel fermentation and 6 months in oak has resulted in a somewhat sickly sweet, caramel flavor dominating nose and palate. Just too much for me
Red
2012 Bodegas del Jaro Ribera del Duero Jaros Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
82 points
Pleasant enough Ribeiro but didn't make much of an impression

Flight 2 - Rosés (2 notes)

Rosé
2015 Bodegas Altún Rioja Altún Rosé Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
88 points
This makes a point of calling itself a rosé rather than a rosado, which is reflected in its very pale, translucent salmon pink colour. Attractive whiff of boozy strawberries on the nose. Generous but not blowsy on the palate. Nice summer wine
Rosé
2014 Bodegas Ramon Bilbao Rioja Rosado Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
84 points
Pleasant, but not the delicacy or the fragrance of the Altun

Flight 3 - Reds (18 notes)

Red
2014 Bodega Mustiguillo El Terrerazo Finca Terrerazo Spain, Valencia, El Terrerazo
92 points
Terrific vino de pago from Valencia. Organic. 100% Bobal. 14.5 %. Intense raspberry and cherry fruit of wonderful purity. Real energy. A fair dose of new oak, lots of roasted coffee bean at first, but then striking a harmonious balance. Has a nice lightness of touch, with well integrated acidity, while retaining a nice plumpness in the mouth. Not cheap, but worth buying again. € 22,95.
Red
2014 Bodegas Epifanio Rivera Ribera del Duero Erial Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
90 points
Wonderful new discovery and at € 8,95 a bottle a fantastic value. Clean fresh cherry and blueberry fruit. No hard edges. Very moreish. Tasted like a much more expensive wine
Red
2010 Bodegas Pintia Toro Pintia Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
93 points
Classy wine. Intense raspberry and cherry fruit. Real energy. Beginning to show some animal, leathery secondary aromas. Still quite a bit of furry tannin. Lovely now but one for the long haul, I think.

A different taste world from most Spanish reds. Lighter bodied though still robust. Strawberry, red cherry fruit, a bit of liquorice. A first I felt this was a little dull, hollowed out - perhaps by carbonic maceration. But it became more lively after it had been opened for a while. Attractively peppery finish had me thinking Zweigelt. Nice, but not as impressed as I was with the 2012 last year.
Red
2013 Bodegas Del Rosario Bullas Las Reñas Selección Spain, Murcia, Bullas
Made from Monastrell and Syrah, this had a very attractive nose of blueberries and violets after a short chill in the fridge, but developed barnyard and VA aromas as it warmed up. Off bottle?
Red
2012 Finca de la Rica Rioja El Nómada de la Rica Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
85 points
Quite a structured, austere style of Rioja. Nice fruit on the nose but a bit lifeless on the palate.
Red
2013 Telmo Rodríguez Toro Gago Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
85 points
This made the right noises but just lacked energy and character. Reasonable fruit and quite structured but I found it dried out on the palate.
Red
2011 Bodegas Hermanos Peciña Rioja Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
88 points
Very tasty wine for the price point (€7,95). Retro style Rioja with ripe cherry and berry fruit, and lashings of creamy vanilla, offering uncomplicated fun.
Red
2005 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
95 points
Magnificent young Rioja. Lots of berry and stone fruit, perhaps surprisingly so for a Gran Reserva. Sophisticated. Had me thinking of a fine, mature Pomerol.

2013 Ferrer Bobet Priorat Vinyes Velles Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
88 points
Much hyped in Spain - 98 pts in one guide - but a bit disappointing on first tasting. A bit nondescript, a suggestion of carbonic maceration. But developed into something quite nice, in a pleasingly austere way that one often finds with serious Carignan. 14.5%

2014 Bodegas Epifanio Rivera Ribera del Duero Erial Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Perhaps less chilled than the previous bottle, and consequently (?) giving off aromas I associate with carbonic maceration. But still a very drinkable wine.

Dark profiled, brooding. Serious wine but pleasurable too

2009 Celler del Roure Valencia Maduresa Spain, Valencia

Another impressive showing from a wine I tried and liked last year. From the hills inland from Valencia. The local Mondó grape, plus Monastrell and international varieties. 14.5%

2012 Mas Martinet Priorat Martinet Bru Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
One of those wines that's really appealing on first acquaintance but proves to be a bit too much. Lovely and surprisingly elegant aromatics, with clean, fresh blueberry and just a whiff of port. But there's this jammy sweetness on the palate that gets too much after the first glass
Red
2014 Cellers de Scala Dei Priorat Prior Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Very good modern expression of Priorat. Clean, polished, refreshing and at the same time dark toned
Red
2011 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Crianza Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
90 points
Tasty, very drinkable wine, with first plums then blueberries dominating on the nose, and a bit of caramel in the background. Not at the very finest level - there was a bit of cardboard there, and perhaps a lack of real energy -but VGV at €10,75. 14.5%

2014 Casa Castillo Jumilla El Molar Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
90 points
n enjoyed this fresh, light expression of high altitude Grenache. It shows nice typicity but has an unusually aetherial quality. Somewhat reminiscent of new wave, cool site Priorat. Nice and good value.

2013 Casa Castillo Jumilla Las Gravas Spain, Murcia, Jumilla

Though this is more expensive than El Molar, and has a whopping WA score of 94, I prefer the lightness and freshness of its sibling. This is a bigger, sweeter more powerful wine, a blend of 70% Monastrell and 15% each of Syrah and Grenache, and the Syrah gives it a nice lift on the nose. Nice, andit may develop well in bottle, but for now I prefer the Molar

Flight 4 - Sweet and fortified wine (2 notes)

White - Fortified
N.V. Emilio Lustau Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda Papirusa Spain, Andalucía, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda
91 points
Bold, characterful Manzanilla, combining lots of flor with a good salty tang. Rich, generous on the palate with a long, perhaps slightly cloying finish. Top Sherry nonetheless

On the nose, this is all freshly baked bread and toasted almonds and hazelnuts. Powerful, uncompromising tastes of savoury umami and flor. Not subtle, but quite a mouthful.
