Introduction

Tonight's theme was the Loire Valley!

Flight 1 - Starter (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Champalou Vouvray Pétillant Brut France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray Pétillant
Nose shows yeast, bread, flint and chalk. Richer on the body, but with a great backbone of acid. Very fresh, citrus zest, brioche.

Flight 2 - Dry Chenin (4 notes)

White
2007 Château d'Epiré Savennières France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
89 points
Already showing its age, with a hint of oxidation and some honey on the nose. Very rich and full bodied. Yellow fruit, lime, glycerine, with a soft texture. Medium acidity.
White
2012 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant

Fragrant, beautiful nose. Flowers, sweet white grape juice, and honey. Lush, rich and dense on the palate; enough to come across as slightly sweet. Yellow stone fruit. Beautifully integrated with great acidity.

Interesting nose; seems like some spice or smoke alongside cut flowers. A little hard to place. Lovely body, with lemon curd, white peach, flowers, and a great richness. Nicely balanced with great acidity.

White
2012 Château de l' Eperonnière Savennières Croix Picot France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
Is this what you call cat pee? Interesting nose. Medium+ weight, lemon and chalk on the palate. Finishes a bit dry and austere.

Flight 3 - Sauvignon Blanc (4 notes)

White
2009 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Ortus France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
91 points
There's some tropical fruit here, but the name escapes me. Either way, it's seductive, alongside grapefruit and citrus. More lemon and citrus on the body, which is quite round, perhaps with some oak? Medium-plus weight, with great acidity and a good amount of complexity.
White
2012 Marc Deschamps Pouilly-Fumé Vinealis - Les Loges France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
90 points
A touch astringent on the nose, with hints of anise. Lemon and lime on the palate with a big backbone of acid. Finishes dry and a bit tart.
White
2013 Lucien Crochet Sancerre Le Chêne France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Really enjoyable at the moment. Lots of grapefruit and grass to start. Medium-plus body with a nice richness showing yellow fruit, lemon curd, and minerals. Very fresh, with enough acid on the finish to keep you coming back for more.
White
2014 Domaine Andre Neveu Sancerre Les Longues Fins France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
90 points
Flowers and grass on the nose. The fruit comes across as slightly sweet, with flavors of white grape and citrus. Fresh and young, with not a lot of complexity, but medium acid.

Flight 4 - Sweet (4 notes)

White - Off-dry
2011 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Demi-Sec France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Not my favorite tonight; dry, with lots of acid and acetone. Slightly sweet.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Le Haut-Lieu France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
93 points
Minerals, flint, and orange peel. Lovely body. Sweet but balanced. Peach, white grapes, medium+ acidity.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Lys France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire

Nose of orange peel and spice. Soft, elegant body with excellent balance. Beautiful fruit.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Didier Dagueneau Les Jardins de Babylone Moelleux France, Southwest France, Jurançon

Dense and rich; quite nice and complex. Lots of honey and peach on the palate, leading into a lengthy finish with great acidity.

Flight 5 - Blind fun (2 notes)

Red
2009 Château Coudray Montpensier Chinon Le Grand Bouqueteau France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Tasted blind. Red spice, cinnamon. Pure fruit, cherry, spice, and a little cough syrup. Medium length on the finish with good acidity.
Red
2001 J. Rochioli Pinot Noir West Block USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted blind. Pepper, smoke, and a little bit of VA. Nice red cherry fruit is still fresh, rounded out with some spice. Bigger body is balanced out with plenty of acid. Showing age around the corners, but the fruit is still there.

Flight 6 - To finish (1 note)

Red
2005 Clarendon Hills Syrah Piggott Range Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
Lots of mint. Lots. Plus some dark cherry fruit and plum in the big, dense body. Dry tannins to finish. It's intense.
