Introduction

A couple of members often buy at auction, so they put on a few recent buys for us to try.

Flight 1 - the whites (3 notes)

Really these white weren't that old. But the Sancerre and Chablis were very good.

White
2010 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnés France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
89 points
Very alive and fresh with a spritz in the mouth. Lovely mouth feel, hint of honey and mineral. Most unlike a Sauvignon Blanc, which means I like it.
White
2006 De Bortoli Sémillon Limited Release Murphy's Vineyard Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin
86 points
Grassy, clean and long, but lacks character. Its meant to be toasty with lemon curd and straw, but I didn't really get this wine Nothing wrong with it I guess.
White
2012 Domaine de la Cornasse Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
flowers, citrus and minerals on the nose with a touch of vanilla, nuts and mineral in a really well balanced wine.

Flight 2 - A couple of Oz shiraz's. Very different styles. (2 notes)

Subtle v bold. the Watershed was lovely and surprising. The Kay brother is big and bold. Something for everyone.

Red
2002 Watershed Shiraz Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
91 points
Very smooth, with bramble and mint, long finish. Lovely savoury wine of mid weight.
Red
2006 Kay Brothers Shiraz Hillside Amery Vineyards Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
90 points
Big, big, big. Rich and sweet. No lack of complexity and length. All the berry flavours and heat you'd expect. I would not be able to drink more than a glass.

Flight 3 - Three old Fench wines. Two clarets and a burgundy. And a fauly Rioja (4 notes)

Shame about the Rioja. The burgundy made up for it though. I thought this was associated with Jean Chauvenet, but it's a big merchant bottling. With the claret Gazin 83 was the winner and I wondered about the condition of the Giscours, but ultimately its probably a question of style. I think both need drinking.

Red
1985 Françoise Chauvenet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Rich red colour with undergrowth and truffles on the nose. Tastes still has red berries and deeper, loganberry perhaps. Tannins are resolved and the finish long. My WOTN
Red
1975 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
88 points
The nose is very intense, leaf and branch. Off putting but the wine itself is still fresh and the fruit good.
Red
1983 Château Gazin Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
90 points
Still very much a merlot nose of tea leaf and fruit. An iron, metallic edge adds interests. This is long and mature drinking well.
Red
1977 Berberana Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
flawed
Oxidised

Flight 4 - Two more Syrah's. An ozzy and a crozes. (2 notes)

I know the Clarendon hills gets parker points by the bucket full but the Thalabert simply stole this taste off.

Red
2004 Clarendon Hills Syrah Moritz Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
91 points
Very ripe and sweet fruit. The nose is jammy with hints of bacon. There enough acidity and the simple fruit is long and delicious.
Red
1989 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
93 points
Rich and brambly, there an undercurrent of meat and leaf litter. Velvety finish. This is holding up and was thought to be much younger. Joint WOTN

Flight 5 - Two Sweeties to finish. (2 notes)

A very tired palette by now. Both good the Italian so much more going on.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1982 Château Filhot France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
sweet, complex, very late in the evening. Really enjoyed this wine.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1988 Maculan Torcolato Italy, Veneto, Breganze
92 points
A burnt butterscotch colour is mirrored in the tasted. Toffee, orange peel, nuts and lovely flaming acidity. Really outstanding wine

Closing

Some lovely wines. One of the best tastings we have put on. Well done Paul and Neills. Only one fail on this sort of night is a testament to the age ability of these wines. I was split on WOTN on balance the NSG edged the Thalabert but both are excellent.
