Tasting at the Felsina Winery

Felsina Winery

Tasted July 16, 2016 by BilboBaggins with 283 views

Introduction

Great tasting accompanied by lunch at the Felsina winery. Good local food, and even though we only ordered (and paid) for the I Sistri, Chianti Classico, Rancia and Fontalloro, then we ended up also tasting several more. Good hospitality and great food, matched with great Chianti.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

2013 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga I Sistri Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Quite a nice nose, with good fruity melon and a bit of lemon. Some minerality. The nose is maybe 89-90 points, but the palate lets it down, with not much going on. It seems a bit thin.

2012 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
Very classic, somewhat austere chianti. tobacco, wet earth, leather etc. Not much fruit. Enjoyable, and good value, but i did not find it very interesting. 89-90.

2012 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
93 points
My favorite wine at the tasting. Served in their tasting room, so I do not know how long the bottle had been open. Elegant with prominent tobacco, floral and mineral notes. Very complex already. A bit young and austere, but very enjoyable now. 93-94 points.

A second bottle tried a week later was much more closed and did not display the same complexity. If you are planning on enjoying this within the next couple of years, then you should let it breathe for a while first.

2011 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Decidely more modern in style than the 2012 Rancia. Darker with more red and black fruit notes, but less complexity and less floral and spicy notes. 91-92.

More modern in style than the rest of the Felsina range. Good dark fruit and a bit of minerality. However, the taste is a little short, and it is lacking in complexity. A nice wine, but better QPR in the Sangiovese dominated wines.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico
91 points
Nice, deep amber color. On the nose, we get walnuts, nice dried fruits, some lacquer notes and a light touch of sherry. Not too sweet nor austere. Very good vin santo. The score might be a bit low, as I am not traditionally a fan of the style.
