Introduction

A chance to look at some of the best Australian Chardonnay's

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White
2014 Giaconda Chardonnay Estate Vineyard Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
84 points
This has got to be one of the most overrated Chardonnay's in Australia. I don't get it? Rave reviews are everywhere for this wine from any vintage but it falls well short for me. Over the top is an understatement and overpriced. If you like massive amounts of sulphides and oak then this is the bomb. I guess you have to marvel at how he gets so much artefact into the wine. Subtle it is not.

2013 Hardys Chardonnay Eileen Hardy Australia, Tasmania

Not a bad wine but a bit clunky and lacks focus. Looks a bit older already.

2013 Mount Mary Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
85 points
Can't say I loved this. Had a sort of tropical element to it which seemed simple and it was a bit broad. Warmer vintage and I think it shows a bit here
White
2014 Felton Road Chardonnay Block 2 New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
79 points
Marmalade nose and lean palate. Much hyped producer in New Zealand but again I don't get it? Lacks any flavour just acidified juice, lean and tough. Yet again can't get excited about NZ Chardonnay.
White
2014 Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay Australia, Tasmania, Coal River
80 points
Sounding like a broken record but this wine has an identity crisis. Trying to be Chablis from Tasmania is the read I get here. The result is a wine which is green as grass almost like Sauvignon Blanc and without any of the generosity that a good Chablis provides. Missed the boat again but gets rave reviews? What is going on?
White
2014 Coldstream Hills Chardonnay Reserve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
91 points
This was much better, subtle elegance and some substance, flinty sulphide character. Not overdone either and harmonious. Very good effort.

2014 Giant Steps Chardonnay Tarraford Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

Very average thought something was wrong with it. Underripe and lean, quite acidic. Lacks generosity and warmth.

2014 Tarrawarra Chardonnay Reserve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
92 points
Took a little time to get into its stride but was an excellent wine. Shows very subtle mineral thread which gains momentum as it sits in the glass. Tight but not underripe with lovely acidity and excellent length. My second favourite of the bracket.
White
2014 Vasse Felix Chardonnay Heytesbury Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
93 points
This was the wine of the tasting. Gorgeous nose of peach with a complex chalky mineral theme. Almost too much but never goes too far in any aspect. Flirts with being fat but has just the right amount of verve and tension to make it very interesting. One of the best Aussie chardonnay's I've had in a while and great value. High class.

2011 François Raveneau Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
88 points
Very good village. Everything that makes Raveneau great without the complexity of the crus but still very good. Definitely ready now.
White
2014 Bannockburn Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
78 points
Horrible. So much acid and so lacking in freshness. Not designed with drinking in mind.
