Introduction

A rather dissapointing vertical tasting of K. Lazaridis Syrah at Oinoscent

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2000 Domaine Costa Lazaridi Syrah Greece, Macedonia, Drama
87 points
Very ripe to overripe nose, fig, prune, coffee and fruit in alcohol, chocolate notes with a few bits of red fruit in the back. In the palate, the wine feels very round, a lot of balsamic notes, melted tannins, short finish. The wine’s going downhill now, lost structure, intensity, complexity.

The nose is quite mute and of lower intensity than expected, even though with time it got better. The fruit is ripe but the profile is far more flowery that the 3 wines tried before that. In the palate, the wine is of the same intensity, ripe red and black cherry, light body, no complexity for a wine of such age, thin with short finish.
Red
2008 Domaine Costa Lazaridi Syrah Greece, Macedonia, Drama
88 points
Ripe and sweet nose, med+ intensity, complex and subtle, red and black fruit, prunes, nice integrated oak, ripe fig and a few floral notes too. In the palate, the wine feels rich, ripe red and black fruit, nice tannins, alcohol burn, feels ripe altogether. The oak is more upfront in the palate than the nose, med intensity and finish. Worth keeping this for a few more years
Red
2011 Domaine Costa Lazaridi Syrah Greece, Macedonia, Drama
88 points
Dense nose, med+ intensity, red and mostly black fruit, berries, cherries, ripe and fresh, sweet spices. The oak is more upfront, vanilla, nice sour cherry. In the palate, the wine is far better than the 2013 tried before, feels denser, same fruit and more aggressive tannins. The oak is more obvious, there is an alcohol kick there too. It needs more time to come together.
Red
2013 Domaine Costa Lazaridi Syrah Greece, Macedonia, Drama
86 points
The nose is fairly weak, clear red cherry, a bit herbal, prunes, black fruit, some flowery notes, thin layer of oak. In the palate, the alcohol cuts through with ease, red and a bit darker fruit. It feels thinner in the palate, bitter tannins. Weak and with short finish.
