Introduction

A big thank you to Nate and Paul for taking care of us this evening and letting us enjoy these wines with fresh seafood.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

Disgorged May 19, 2014. 80% pinot noir, 20% chardonnay. A light touch of citrus on the nose, followed by some yeast and bready notes. A very, very light touch of mushroom as well. Very round, this doesn't have quite the cut that I'd have expected from a 2008, but perhaps that's because this is a pinot-heavy wine. The acidity here isn't as tangy or minerally, but it is there. It would be difficult for me to pin this as 2008 if served blind. A fairly decent beverage, if not the most exciting.

Disgorged June 2014. There's a touch of nuttiness on this bottle, which is surprising, given my experience with this wine half a year ago. This was clearly an advanced bottle (not too surprising, given where I managed to find it), but it had advanced quite nicely. In fact, I'd guess that this was a good approximation of where this wine would be headed. Despite a bit of those nutty and oxidative tones, there is still lots of fresh acidity on the palate, coupled with some really zippy minerality. There's a bit of very ripe apple on the palate as well. A bit disappointing given my previous experience, but still good.

2008 Champagne Suenen Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Disgorged May 11, 2015, 3 g/L of dosage. This bottle showed so much better than the bottle I had last. The nose here just comes right at you and punches you in the face. Very perfumed, with tons of sweet lemon and almond. The palate has very taut acidity, and yet the fruit seems to have filled out a little bit better on this bottle. I know Suenen is a relative newcomer, but colour me impressed. I'd love to see how these wines do with a bit of age on them.

2008 A. Margaine Champagne Blanc de Blancs Special Club France, Champagne

In contrast to the Suenen and the Jose Michel, this was a much softer champagne, although it still had plenty of bracing acidity to it. I think the difference was that the fruit seemed to show a little bit riper here, and there was more of a yellow character to it. While this was a good bottle of champagne without a doubt, I thought the structure on this bottle was a bit soft, although it certainly seemed to carry that acidic power of 2008.

A producer who doesn't get the amount of respect owed. This was super drinkable and simply a pleasure to gulp. I was almost reminded a bit of Sprite, thanks to the pronounced tart lemon character here. Of course, this is so much more than sugar water, but it's at that level of drinkability. There's a lovely amount of tart green apple and almond blossom on the finish.

2008 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

This was probably the best wine on the table tonight, and while it could easily be admired for what it had, that can only be done from a distance. There's going to be a lot here, but patience is required. The nose is metamorphic, changing from one minute to the next, showing ripe pears, citrus peel, chalky minerality... The palate is electric, with lots of wound up extract and a real acid backbone. Granted, it's a bit angular today, but with the benefit of time, this ought to round out into a real nice wine.

Rosé
2015 Weingut Knoll Blauer Burgunder Federspiel Loibner Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

This is a serious rose. At first, when you smell it, you think it's just going to be one of those tasty and slightly sweet summer quaffers. Well, the truth of the matter is that it is one of those wines, if you choose to enjoy it as such. But there's just so much more stuffing on the palate -- there's some serious minerality to be found underneath all that cheerful and tasty strawberry and sweet red cherry.

Truth be told, I'm not sure I know what to make of this wine. It smells like a middle-tier sherry with those oxidative tones, but there are some weird other notes to it. The palate's similarly odd. It's got just a moderate bit of sweetness to it, as well as an odd note of pickled watermelon rind. There's also something in here that reminds me a bit of macvin (though it has been years since I had my last macvin). Definitely better if served at a colder temperature.
