Spectacular Riesling. This has it all; an array of fruit ranging from ripe peaches and oranges to tarter citrus flavours, a stony mineral base beneath, and all sorts of floral, herbal, smoky, and mature burnished notes augmenting the fruit and minerality. It comes across just slightly off-dry with moderate sweetness and powerful acids giving it lift, and the finish has remarkable length.

Perhaps it was a bit tough to taste this after the sweeter Rieslings from Prüm and ZH, but this took some time to show its colours. A touch austere and shrill at first, but filled out with air to show ripe citrus and pear fruit over a stony base with good acidity beneath. Still rather young and not showing much complexity beyond the youthful fruit and minerality, but it's very nicely balanced and I imagine this would be a lot of fun to try with some more cellar time.

Really impressed by this. Ripe, plummy Merlot fruit tinged with more flamboyant sandalwood and other spicy/floral notes, and some faint oaky elements on the nose that did integrate with time in the decanter. It's certainly a ripe wine with lots of richness to the fruit and a plush, velvety texture on the palate, but there's also surprisingly bright acidity beneath that gives this good lift. Very nice.

In a great spot right now. Lots of fresh, dark berried and blackcurrant fruit at its core, augmented by more savoury cedar and pencil lead notes. There's still a bit of grainy tannin on the back end, but the structure seems to come mainly from the acidity which makes it feel very fresh and lively on the palate.
White - Off-dry
1989 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Best showing I've had from the '89 in some time. Still remarkably fresh and youthful; light on its feet with lots of bright, ripe citrus and green apple fruit flavours accented by slate, florality, and layers of more mature smoky and savoury notes. There's a faint tinge of botrytis apparent on the back end, but it's not overly sweet and actually comes across a bit drier than a lot of modern Kabinett. Impeccably balanced with plenty of acidity to match the gentle sweetness, and finishes long. Glad I have another.
