Introduction

Another year, another Pinotpalooza. This year I took advantage of their VIP option - yes it's twice as much as an ordinary ticket but they do give you a free feed, you get a little vertical at the Burgundy bar and, far more importantly, you get two hours tasting before the hoards arrive. Consequently I was at the front of the queue clutching my ticket in my sweaty hands full of nervous excitement and my route amongst the wineries and the wines to try fully planned out!

Flight 1 (81 notes)

Red
2015 Giant Steps Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
stalky red berry, spicy…ashy red berry fruit…meh
Red
2015 Giant Steps Pinot Noir Applejack Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
stalks again dominate the fruit on the nose but the fruit fights back on the palate with some acidity to support it. I'd like to see this in a few years to see if those stalks integrate. I may have said that about the giant steps wines previously…
Red
2013 Goodman Wines Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
slightly dusty, candied red fruit, slight spice…fresh and fruity, a bit short though and finishes quite dry. Simple. Too much at 40 AUD
Red
2015 Journey Wines Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
perfumed warm red berry fruit, uncomplicated…fresh, easy, fruity with light tannic burr. Quaffable, enjoyable. Nice. But it's a bit expensive at 38 AUD
Red
2015 Medhurst Wines Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
wild ferment over candied red fruit, quite perfumed…a little sweet berry fruit then slight tannic burr. Hmm
Red
2015 Medhurst Wines Pinot Noir Reserve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
slightly meaty and stalky then pretty red berry fruit. More of the same on the palate with a very slight sourness to the fruit. Okay.
Red
2012 Santolin Wines Pinot Noir Individual Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
medium minus intensity aromas of red berry crumble, slight cheesiness as well…juicy, a touch thing with red berry notes but it grows on the palate supported by the acidity which lends it freshness and carries the fruit long. Good. A pleasant surprise!
Red
2013 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
blackberry fruit, very slight stalks…juicy, fleshy, slight wild ferment funkiness, slightly drying tannins…meh
Red
2012 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir Robinson Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula

ripe cherry and stalky notes, coffee…stalky and candied on the palate - disjointed. Meh

red berry fruit and spice…simple, okay but, alas, a little expensive at 36 AUD
Red

wild ferment, muted fruit, slightly funky, spice, ooh some sous bois…savoury, quite dense tannins, acid doesn't carry the fruit. Hmm.
Red
2013 Nautilus Estate Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
stalks and perfumed cherry fruit, some muted spice, earthiness, a welcoming nose…juicy, cherry, drying front of mouth grip threatens but the fruit persists. Long. Good.
Red
2014 Spy Valley Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
sweet cherry, slight earth; quite muddy in fact, juicy, fleshy, easy, approachable, cherry fruit, slight drying tannins - good and, for a kiwi at AUD 30, pretty good value as well.
Red
2012 Spy Valley Pinot Noir Envoy New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
rich, stalks, new oak, ripe fruit…not what I look for but this is really good and coarse carries crisp cherry and berry fruit with front of mouth tannic grip. Nice
Red
2013 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
slightly candied and toffeed fruit…more of the same on the palate slightly burnt tannins. Meh

Red
2014 Dry River Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
Funky and meaty, slightly reductive almost; closed down. With work some fruit starts to come through though it does feel a little disjointed. More of the same on the palate - all the ingredients are there but it feels disjointed like watching a puppy on a slippery floor.
Red

perfumed red cherry, slightly funky…a little tar with some bitter coffee on the palate. Meh.

Closing

Wow, here we are again, the VIP thing was worth every additional cent of it as I got through my list just as the hoards arrived. This took me up to the Schubert and then I muddled around a few others and chatted to a few old and new chums. Lovely. Then bumped into E & M and then headed back to theirs to forget about spitting and remember swallowing...
