Flight 1 (11 notes)
Red
1964 Bodegas Bilbainas Rioja Viña Pomal Reserva Especial
94 points
Right from the start - fragile, lively and elegant nose of sweet vanilla, sweet fruit, a bit of barnyard as well as meaty salami notes, which grow with time into smoked meat and warm raspberry jam. Caressing on the palate, beautiful silky texture. To be drunk without food. That's what mature Rioja is all about!
Red
1964 Federico Paternina Rioja Gran Reserva
89 points
Somewhat more straightforward and simple than Vina Pomal RE '64. A bit less concentrated, smoky with a hint of menthol. Very nice by itself, but the direct comparison didn't help it.
Red
1964 Martinez Lacuesta Rioja Reserva Especial
89 points
Very light and fragile. Peppery, red berries, lovely soft accidity - airy wine.
Red
1964 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Viña Albina Reserva
87 points
Clarette style - straightforward, linear and enjoyable, though, could be more complex.
Red
1964 La Rioja Alta Rioja Reserva 904
90 points
Good, but not great as it should be. Rather full bodied, intense bouquet of some animal notes and dried fruits. Firm structure, more dense and full bodied, tannin still present. It has this slightly corky-sweaty aroma on the nose which was spoiling the enjoyment for some.
Red
1964 Gomez Cruzado Rioja Gran Reserva Honorable
84 points
Darker than the other wines, more full bodied, but had this not so pleasant herbaceous edgy character.
Red
1964 Bodegas Carlos Serres Rioja Carlomagno
89 points
This was interesting. Juicy nose of orange, tangerine. Good acidic backbone, nice tannin, pleasant texture. Juicy, but with a metallic finish.
Red
1964 Bodegas Franco-Españolas Rioja Royal Reserva
91 points
Initially some vegetable notes, but they soon blew off to reveal a superb taste of chocolate muffins. Loved by almost everyone.
Red
1964 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo
91 points
Better bottle than the one before. Toasted coffee and chocolate dessert.
Red - Sweet/Dessert
1964 Torres Penedès Sangre de Toro Abocado
91 points
What a nice surprise! Superb acidity, strong grippy tannins left. Ripe fruits and rather fresh finish. Why did Miguel Torres decide to change Sangre de Toro Abocado to what a nondescript wine it is now?
