Barolo 2010 & 2001

Introduction

Looking at two grand vintages of Barolo - one painfully young, the other approaching maturity. All wines tasted blind, several bottles send directly from the producers.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Elio Altare Barolo Arborina Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Classical nose with herbes and red berries – in the mouth more red berries, and a creamy, delicious substance – it is modern, but made with respect for the tradition; it has sweetness and is velcomning in spite of the serious substance and intensity. On the third day it has grown – and tannins are still present. 94+

Red
2010 Elio Altare Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Initially somewhat metallic and hard – very closed, although the fruit is light and friendly enough to seem welcoming. There are tannins here; on the second day much better, still tough, but more fruit, more kindness, beautiful structure.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Very tight, young nose – in the mouth it is light, fine, but firm with red berries, tannins – something more grand is in the making, surely, and there is something aristocratic here – it turns you away for now. After being opned for a couple of days, it becomes softer and more friendly – and still absolutely fresh... 94+

2010 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Cannubi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Herbal nose; the taste is relatively dark, moist, well-made, but short (in comparison) - and not so complex and clean as it's competitors. A slightly sticky fruit ... following day clearly better, more developed and complex, but the little candy-fruit is still there. Wait for it... 90+

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Served from magnum - in a line up of great 2010's. Initially, I am not so happy, but having the great fortune of being able to follow this wine over five days from opening, I am increasingly impressed; it is toasted, creamy and modern, yes, but there is still a balance to the wine - and it is improving days after opening, and it is a splendid example of modern barolo with lots of tannins and structure to last for two decades, if you wish.
Red
2010 Fratelli Revello Barolo Vigna Conca Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Juicy, dark but quite restrained version of Revello; delicious and straightforward, not the same complexity (and identity) as Scavino, but a fine and quite addictive beverage. Blindly, I wrote dark and modern ... The day after still very delicate and delicious, no signs of fatigue.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Modern touch with some solid concentration, a hint of kirsch, but surprisingly open and ready; juicy & smooth. Unchanged the next day.
Red
2010 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Herbal nose, but the taste is luscious, rich, dark - and ready to guzzle in a cool way. Subtle tannins. Very well-made, indeed, and what it lacks in feminine elegance are present in basic exquisiteness. Significantly better than Marchesi Cannubi right now. On the third day lively, fruity still. 93+

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2010 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
96 points
Powerhouse. Intense and fresh with a really serious (not kirsch) core of fruit; delicious now, actually, the clear winner in this set. Bright fruit, dancing, elegant. excellent on the third day, fresh and attractive and more open - lots of tannin, of course.

2010 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
ramatic, dark nose - pronounced & toasted. The taste juicy, modern, no beating around the bush - the tannins bites from this at the endt, here is something to wait for. Good length, and quite approachable. On the third day it has thrown some of the roasted notes, has become brighter and friendlier, less modern in its expression. 92+

Red
2010 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto Campè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
amazingly light; somewhat green, slightly harbal nose nose - taste is better, fuller, the tannins are a bit aggressive and still green. Somewhat better on day 2,m this needs time to come around. 91+

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
(bottle from my cellar ) - upon opening young, tight, tannic - not very generous (tastes almost like the 2010); light and elegant, yes, but with plenty of old school acidity up front. It will gain with age, but will it ever become true friendly, I wondered? When tasting blind, I recognized the wine, but called it "straight forward" - one the day after it is great, open, classical, even with generous fruit (“straight forward) with softened tannins showing up in the aftertaste. This has many years to go.
Red
2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Modern, dense, concentrated with kirsch and rich fruit; poerful and wonderful with dark, roasted notes. Absolutely approachable, but it will live long (10 years) yet. Rich and delicious and really unchanged next day, again it is the power and grand fruit that stands out.

2001 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
97 points
Old school, intense, elegant - and seem ready and open with cherry stones, camphor and a little smokiness. Tannins in the aftertaste. Tasted blind, it wins the battle vs Monfertino, actually - I have the same impression on day 2; intense, living - huge wine.

Harbal nose - taste is just stunning, light on its feat, en danseuse, delectable fruit, Burgundian elegance. Here is still the discrete tannin, only a refinement. Highly addictive. On the third day actually quite identitical, albeit with slight incipient signs of fatigue.

Red
2001 Elio Altare Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
Significant darker than it siebling; a little rougher also, more tannic - lots of primary, fresh fruit here. Classic rather than modern som much to come... on the third day still fresh, more fruity, light and elegant.
Red
2001 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
The strict, manly style is shining through, but this is much more open than Monfortino; the fruit is light, delicate, the style is clean, mouthwatering, delectable, a stylish, aristocratic drink - not pandering for the sweet tooth. On the second day primarily masculine and grandiose - with big fruit, and the very masculine, dramatic dark style continues on the third day.

2001 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Light color. Slightly aging nose - also the day after. The fruit is somewhat animalistic and dramatic. Strict and old school for real, not in the mood to for fun and dance. Vis a vis Giacosa, it loses out big time. I am not sure that this is a representative bottle. On the third day, more or less completely gone, as in dead.
Red
2001 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì Tildìn Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
93 points
Completely atypical, but really good - in the direction of US Cab almost, very international, very delicious, very nice - scores the most beautiful girl in the hotel bar with just a discreet gesture. Bond. James Bond. One must make a bow ... unchanged on the second day - a nice glass from the first class cabin

Flight 11 (3 notes)

Red
2001 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Relatively dark fruit with a deep, creamy structure, a sweet, ripe fruit, polished without being to slick; seems quite à point right now. Tasted blind, I found it “creamy” and the day after it is unchanged, delicious. What it lacks in terroir and rusticity, it gains in superior elegance.
Red
2001 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto Campè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Initially very tired, fig marked nose - taste better, albeit somewhat flat, fat, flabby, rich, sweet, lacks vibrancy, but then, lo and behold, on day 2 much better the next day with more substantial freshness of the fruit, and even fresher on day 3. Wait for this.
Red
2001 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Lightly burned pruny nose; bold, rich, very modern, dark, but delicious enough - just needed time to open up. Ready To drink now. Very tired on the third day.

Flight 12 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Cannubi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Pretty nice; still a modern, commercial style, but extremely well made as such. The wine seems ready, smooth, delicious, with quite elegant sweetness to round it up. While lackin the intensity of the top scorers, it is better than good.
Red
2001 Parusso Barolo Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Dark, kirsch, very international; deep concentration, mineral - vere delicious, but almost too much so, one feels seduced. More terroir in the second day, juicy, but still dark, large, modern... it's not big, it's large. Young still.

Flight 13 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From MG. Dark, modern - and juicy enough, but something covers it all; good wine, but not my style. Improved on the second day and third day, so maybe this just needs time. Final score: 91+
Red
2001 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Somewhat dark, modern, still plenty of tannin and concentration. Very young - good potential. 92+

Flight 14 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Juicy bandit with great fullness and charm - seems ripe with lots of primary fruit left. On the second day still delicious and creamy ... yummi, even. Hold it's own on day 3. Will improve

Absolutely ripe. Sweetness form the full ripe fruit. The wood is gone - almost, still a little bite of tannins remains along with notes of sous bois. This is getting there.
