Château Palmer Vertical

Tasted November 1, 2016 by The Vines That Bind with 600 views

Flight 1 (16 notes)

Red
2010 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
No nose yet, very big, closed, glycerin. Precise and balanced. Intensity. Cassis. Certainly more elegant than the '09. Come back in 30 years.
Red
2009 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Rhubarb and black currant showing up on the nose, very big, somewhat ripe. Not as precise or balanced on the palate as the 2010, heat showing though. Not wild about this... come back in 20+ years.

Rosy and fat strawberry, fairly opulent nose. Already showing a bit more aromatic maturity. Palate is still young. Big, hot, and quite dry. Still enjoyable now, but would not be revisiting for at least 15 years.

Very good nose already, rich and opulent currant and cherry fruit, beginning to give a bit of that 'damp forest on a hot day' type feel. Good balance on the palate with dense black currant, rhubarb, and chocolate covered cherries on the palate. The most exciting of the '00 flight. Would buy this over any of the younger.

2004 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Very pretty and elegant nose, actually superior to the '05. Ripe red and blueberry fruit. A little candied on the nose. Still young on the palate but more approachable and giving than the '05. Good balance and flavorful finish here.

Comparable aromatics to the 2000, perhaps a touch more developed and earth-leaning. Very nice. Bigger tannin on the palate, plenty of juice left to go, not particularly memorable out of the lineup. Came back to this after an hour and was only somewhat more open and enjoyable.

Excellent nose indicative of a top quality left bank. Red cedar, damp soil, but with a solid core of juicy red fruit. Syrupy blackberry fruit through the palate and long finish. Developed flavors but still lots of energy in here. Solid bottle of wine. Shorter finish than the '85, but still very good.

Lovely nose here too, earth-driven but with plenty of black and red berry fruit showing, a touch more rustic than that on the '88. Palate is in a wonderful place for enjoying right now, excellent balance of ripe red and blueberry fruit but with pleasant developed damp earth tones as well. Not yet tertiary, in a lovely place right now showing both maturity but full and intense flavours. Structure suggests another ten years easily. A wine of breed. Very glad to have a 5L of this in the cellar... but a tough call as when to open.

Great nose here too, more St. Estephe than Margaux with rustic dry soil notes above raspberry and cranberry fruit. Traces of brett here. Maturing palate here, firmly secondary with a few tertiary notes. A bit of unpleasant iron in the finish. Some maple. Tiring.

Tough go on the nose, not a lot here, thin and tired, dry cranberry. A little woody. Red cherry coming through. Tired on the palate too. Fruit has browned and the tannin remains. Not flawed, but a weak bottle.

Reading much younger than expected, not very expressive. Could be because the tasting room is cold and this taster is getting over a cold, but this isn't showing anything like the younger wines here tonight. Lots of fruit and flavour on the palate, very youthful. Reminiscent of '96 Ducru, clearly very good but needs to be put away for 5-10 more years.

Same deal as the '96, little more red and black cherry here, but not as expressive as one might hope for on the nose. Candied cherry continues on the palate, but lacks the Cabernet power and more savoury red cedar and tobacco notes.

Again, wonderful bouquet here with ripe currant, strawberry, dark chocolate, damp leathers, and plenty of earth. Great palate delivering solid red berry and blackberry fruit with distinct minerality and good secondary development. Great drinking right now but clearly has a long way to go.

Corked. Was hoping to compare to the 1990.

Intriguing nose here too, interesting contrast against the '82 which is quite different. More red fruit here with a bit of zip and spice. Palate is in excellent shape, great balance, solid dose of developed fruit but a short finish. Clipped ending.

Lovely but curious nose with eucalyptus, mint, and menthol, on top of cool blueberry fruit. Good earth driven tones, damp soil. Some chai. Palate is farther advanced than one would hope for out of an '82. Red berry fruit is yielding to a more tertiary maple.
